Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks later, the penthouse suite overlooking downtown Chicago was quiet, save for the soft hum of the city below and the gentle crackle of the fireplace.

The media storm surrounding Michael Carter’s arrest had dominated national headlines for days. Federal investigators had unraveled the entire web of corruption: not only had Michael attempted to murder his wife for the insurance payout, but financial audits triggered by Dante Vance’s legal team had exposed a decade's worth of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent shell companies, and the systematic theft of the Sterling estate. Ashley was currently cooperating with prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence, throwing Michael completely under the bus.

Maeve—or rather, Aria Sterling—stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the glittering skyline. Her wrist was healing nicely inside a lighter, removable brace, and her body felt stronger every day.

Behind her, the soft click of the door opening signaled Dante’s entry.

He walked quietly across the hardwood floor, carrying a porcelain mug of tea, and handed it to her without a word.

"Thank you," Maeve said, taking a sip and turning to face him. "The lawyers called this morning. The remaining assets of Sterling Global have officially been unfrozen and returned to my name. The board has voted me back as chairperson."

Dante leaned against the window frame beside her, taking a slow sip from his own glass. "I expected nothing less. Your father built that empire to last. It belongs in your hands."

Maeve looked up at him, studying the rugged lines of his face, the jagged scar along his jaw, and the quiet intensity in his slate-gray eyes. For weeks, questions had buzzed in her mind like bees trapped in a jar.

"Dante," she began softly, her voice hesitant. "You said you made a promise to me ten years ago. Before Michael stole my identity, before I forgot who I was... what were we to each other?"

Dante’s gaze drifted out toward the horizon, a rare shadow of vulnerability crossing his features. He set his glass down on the windowsill.

"Ten years ago, before your parents were killed, your father hired my security firm to oversee international logistics for Sterling Pharmaceuticals," Dante explained, his voice low and steady. "I was younger, reckless, and hardened by a life on the streets that taught me how to survive before I learned how to live. You were a brilliant, radiant nineteen-year-old art student who used to wander into your father’s office and completely disrupt my cold, calculated worldview."

A faint, wistful smile touched Dante’s lips.

"We spent three months talking, walking through the city, sharing secrets we never told anyone else," Dante continued, looking back down into her eyes. "I was falling for you so hard it terrified me. But I knew the world I moved in—the enemies I had—were too dangerous for someone like you. I planned to walk away, to protect you by keeping my distance."

His expression darkened, the memory turning bitter.

"Then your parents were murdered. And the night I tried to reach you, to get you out safely... your father's assistant, Michael, had already intercepted you. He drugged you, wiped your digital footprint, placed you into a compromised foster system under a false name, and made it look like you had vanished into thin air."

Maeve’s breath caught in her throat. "You searched for me all that time?"

"Every single day for ten years," Dante said, his voice fierce, carrying an absolute, unshakeable devotion that made her heart ache. "I tore through syndicates, bought out shell companies, tracked down whispers in the dark underworld, all to find where Michael had hidden you. When I finally located you married to him... I realized he was waiting for your thirtieth birthday to finish what he started. I was positioning my team to pull you out legally when he forced our hand on that mountain."

Tears welled in Maeve’s eyes. She reached out, her left hand gently touching the rough, tattooed skin of his forearm.

"You saved my life twice," Maeve whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "On that cliff... and by giving me back the truth."

May you like

Dante covered her hand with his large, warm palm, his slate-gray eyes softening completely.

"You saved yourself, Aria," Dante murmured, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. "Even at the edge of death, you fought for your child. You've always been stronger than you knew."
