Chapter 9 - The Grand Opening

Six months later, the sun was shining brightly over downtown Charlotte.

The grand opening of the flagship Miracle Hands Pediatric Therapy Center was a massive success. Local news cameras were rolling, families were smiling, and children were playing in the colorful, sunlit sensory rooms we had designed with state-of-the-art equipment.

I stood near the entrance, wearing a crisp white blazer and a bright blue lanyard with my name tag: Emma Whitmore, Executive Director.

As I walked out to the courtyard to greet some of the attending donors, a familiar figure caught my eye near the street corner.

It was Adam.

He looked thinner. His suit was cheap and ill-fitting, his shoulders slumped, and he was holding a stack of flyers for a low-level real estate firm where he had managed to land a junior sales job after being blacklisted from every major construction firm in the state.

He stopped on the sidewalk, staring up at the gleaming new building bearing my name and my father’s corporate crest on the stone pillar.

For a second, our eyes locked across the distance.

He took a half-step toward the entrance, looking as though he wanted to say something—to apologize, to ask for a second chance, to beg for a lifeline.

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I didn't feel anger, or pity, or sorrow.

I simply turned my head, smiled brightly at a group of children running past me with balloons, and walked inside.
