Chapter 8 - Rebuilding

While Adam and Lorraine were tearing down what was left of their world, I was sitting in my father’s home office, looking over blueprints and financial statements for a new initiative.
“Are you sure you want to do this, Emma?” my father asked, setting a mug of coffee on the desk beside my laptop.
“I’m positive,” I said, looking up with a genuine smile. “I’ve spent four years hiding my background, pretending I had to struggle for every little thing just to prove a point. But you know what? Being strong doesn't mean refusing help. It means using the resources you have to do something meaningful.”
I was launching the Miracle Hands Foundation—a non-profit pediatric therapy center funded jointly by my father’s charitable trust and my own independent savings. We were planning to open three new clinics across the state, providing free or low-cost occupational, speech, and physical therapy to children from low-income families—the exact kind of families I had worked with during my clinic days.
“You’re going to run circles around the old board,” Richard said with a proud, warm smile. “In fact, I’m stepping down as CEO next year. I was planning to hand the reins to an outside board member, but... I think Whitmore Construction needs someone with your sense of ethics and backbone at the helm.”
I blinked, surprised. “Dad, I don't know the first thing about heavy construction—”

“You know people, Emma. You know integrity. And you know how people behave when they think no one is watching,” Richard said softly. “You have more business sense in your little finger than Adam had in his entire body.”
Over the next few months, the divorce proceedings moved swiftly. Without Adam’s corporate backing or his family’s inflated ego to prop them up, his legal team folded quickly. The court ruled in favor of reimbursing every cent I had contributed during his unemployed years, along with a fair division of assets. Lorraine was forced to put her precious suburban house on the market to help bail Adam out of his mounting legal and financial debts.
