Chapter 13 - Monday Morning at Whitmore Tower

Monday morning arrived with an unforgiving chill. Adam stepped into the soaring headquarters of Whitmore Construction with leaden feet and a knot of pure dread twisting in his stomach. He had spent the entire weekend desperately hoping that Sunday night had been a grotesque fever dream, and that Chairman Whitmore would ultimately look past a family misunderstanding.

Before he could even swipe his badge to enter the executive corridor on the top floor, his personal secretary intercepted him, holding a thick, crisp manila folder.

– Mr. Adam, Chairman Whitmore issued an immediate directive first thing this morning, the secretary announced, her voice entirely devoid of its usual warmth. – Your promotion to Vice President has been formally revoked, effective immediately. Furthermore, the executive board requires you to surrender all active project keys and clear out your office desk by noon.

– What?! – Adam stumbled, his hand slamming against the mahogany wall to keep from falling. – On what grounds? I signed an official corporate contract!

– The Chairman stated explicitly that your professional competency, judgment, and moral character fall far below the baseline standards required by Whitmore Corporation, the secretary recited flatly before turning away without a backward glance.
