Chapter 17 - A Desperate Plea in the Driving Rain

One gray, miserable afternoon, as Emma stepped out from the main entrance of the newly inaugurated therapy center, a bedraggled, desperate figure lunged from beneath an awning to block her path. It was Adam.

He looked hollowed out, his clothes rumpled and stained, dark purple shadows framing his bloodshot, sunken eyes.

– Emma! Please... you have to listen to me! Just one word to your father! – Adam collapsed straight down into a puddle of freezing rainwater at her feet, sobbing uncontrollably. – He’ll listen to you! We were husband and wife, Emma! Please don't let me drown like this!

Emma looked down at the man who had stood by and smirked while his mother degraded her soul. Her expression remained completely undisturbed, filled not with anger, but with profound pity and detachment.

– Do you remember my grandmother’s gold bracelet, Adam? The one I pawned to pay off the final installment of your car when you had nothing? Today, I’ve reclaimed every ounce of self-respect I ever wasted on you, she said softly, stepping cleanly past him. – There is nothing left between us. Goodbye, Adam.
