Chapter 9 - Closing the Ledger

Thursday evening, the rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse apartment. The city lights blurred into streaks of gold and neon below.

My phone chimed on the kitchen island. An email from Marcus Vance.

Subject: Executed Settlement & Dismissals

I opened the attachment. There, scanned in crisp, high-resolution PDF format, were Margaret’s signed confession, the quitclaim deeds, and the finalized stipulations for the expedited divorce decree. Daniel had agreed to plead guilty to domestic battery in exchange for probation and mandatory counseling, his corporate career completely destroyed, his assets stripped down to zero.

He was moving back into a small, rundown apartment across town, supported by nothing more than the shattered remnants of his mother’s dwindling pride.

I closed my laptop and poured a glass of crisp white wine.

Walking out onto the balcony, I felt the cool night air brush against my cheek. The faint mark where my tooth had cut my lip during the slap had almost entirely faded.

For fourteen years, I had believed that love meant shrinking myself to fit inside someone else's expectations. I had believed that keeping the peace was a virtue.

Now, looking out over the city I helped build, I knew the truth. Peace wasn't something you kept by staying silent. It was something you earned by fighting back.
