Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of Hale

“Officer!” Daniel shouted, stumbling forward, his arms outstretched as if to embrace the law enforcement agents. “Thank God. My wife—she’s completely unstable. She assaulted me, she destroyed property, and—and she’s making things up!”
The older officer, a weathered sergeant with a name tag reading Miller, didn’t even look at Daniel’s ruined suit. He looked directly at my bleeding lip, then at the heavy ceramic bowl resting empty on the head table.
“Sir, step back,” Sergeant Miller said, his hand resting calmly on his utility belt. “We received a call regarding a domestic disturbance and physical assault. We also received an automatic server alert from the club's security interface.”
“She hit me with hot food!” Vanessa yelled, pointing a manicured finger at me. “She’s a maniac! Arrest her right now!”
“Ma'am,” the second officer, a younger female officer named Torres, stepped forward, tablet in hand. “I just air-dropped the security footage from the club manager’s terminal. We saw the entire sequence of events. We saw the initial strike.”
Daniel swallowed hard, his throat bobbing. “It was... it was a misunderstanding. Domestic disputes get complicated. We’re family—”
“It’s not a domestic dispute when there’s clear premeditation caught on audio conspiring to commit fraud and harassment,” I said evenly, my voice cutting through the noise of the murmuring crowd. I turned to Sergeant Miller. “Officer, I am Emily Hale. I want to press full charges for assault and battery. Furthermore, I’m filing an immediate restraining order.”
Margaret stood up from her seat, her regal composure completely shattered. Her face was mottled with rage and fear. “Emily, you miserable, ungrateful parasite! You are nothing without this family! Daniel built you up, he gave you a home, he—”
“Margaret,” I interrupted, looking at my mother-in-law with complete indifference. “For fourteen years, I let you believe I was a homemaker because I respected my husband. That respect expired about three minutes ago.”

Daniel lunged forward, but Officer Miller stepped firmly between us, blocking his path.
“Daniel Hale,” Sergeant Miller said, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “Turn around and place your hands behind your back. You’re under arrest for domestic assault.”
