Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

In the sterile, fluorescent-lit confines of the county precinct holding facility, Daniel Hale looked like a shadow of the arrogant man who had demanded his beef stew be served on time.
His expensive designer suit was still stained with dried brown gravy, stiff and smelling faintly of carrots and onions. His hair was uncombed, and dark circles shadowed his eyes.
When the heavy metal door clicked open and his defense attorney, Richard Vance, walked in, Daniel practically leaped across the metal table.
“Get me out of here, Richard,” Daniel hissed, his voice cracking. “This is insane. Emily is my wife! She can't legally hold me on these charges without my consent!”
Richard, a seasoned criminal defense lawyer, sighed heavily and dropped his leather briefcase onto the chair. He looked at Daniel with a mixture of pity and irritation.
“Daniel, you idiot,” Richard muttered, pulling out a sheaf of legal documents. “Did you or did you not strike your wife in front of forty witnesses while a high-definition security camera recorded both the act and your audio confession?”
Daniel blinked, stammering. “That—that was a private matter! She was being insubordinate! She embarrassed my mother at her birthday dinner!”
“Your mother’s birthday dinner is currently being studied by three different prosecutors as evidence of a coordinated conspiracy,” Richard snapped, slamming a document onto the table. “Look at this. Your accounts are frozen. Your business assets have been seized under federal anti-fraud statutes. Your wife’s legal team isn't just filing for divorce—they’ve tied your personal liabilities directly to your mother’s estate.”
Daniel’s face drained of all color. “My mother’s estate? No. No, she can't do that.”

“She owns seventy-eight percent of the primary supply chain holding company that backs half your mother’s real estate portfolio, Daniel!” Richard yelled, losing his professional composure. “She doesn't just want a divorce. She’s taking everything. Unless you can convince her to sign a plea for mediation, you’re looking at five to ten years in federal prison for wire fraud, plus domestic battery.”
Daniel stared at his hands, trembling. The reality of what he had thrown away—his wealth, his status, his safety net, and the woman who had quietly built an empire behind his back—finally came crashing down.
