Chapter 1 - The Rewind

The phone screen glowed in the dim light of the country club dining room, casting an eerie blue light over Daniel Hale’s stew-soaked designer lapels.
Forty pairs of eyes—relatives, old family friends, and country club staff—were locked on the tiny 6-inch display. The audio feed crackled to life, filling the heavy silence of the room.
“I’m telling you, she won’t sign,” Daniel’s recorded voice echoed, clear as day, captured by the overhead security dome.
On screen, the video showed Daniel twenty minutes before the dinner started, pacing near the service entrance with his mother, Margaret.
Margaret’s face on the phone turned pale. She clutched her pearls, her mouth opening in a silent gasp.
“What if she refuses?” Daniel’s digital image asked on the screen.
“Provoke her,” Margaret’s crisp, haughty voice rang out from the speaker for all forty guests to hear. “Make her look incompetent. When she snaps, we control the narrative. The shares have to be transferred before the quarterly audit, Daniel. If she smells a rat, we lose everything.”
The phone screen continued playing, showing the exact moment Daniel grabbed my wrist, the sharp warning I gave him, and the vicious crack of his hand across my face. Then came the final damning phrase, spoken with cold calculation: “She pushed me too far.”
“Turn that off!” Vanessa shrieked, lunging forward like a cornered cat. “That’s—that’s a deepfake! She hacked something together using AI!”
“AI?” I raised an eyebrow, touching the cut on my lip where my tooth had broken through. I looked around the room at Aunt Carol and the rest of the stunned relatives. “At a private country club with enterprise-grade security? Feel free to ask the manager to pull the raw server logs, Vanessa. Or better yet, we can let the two police officers who just walked through the door verify it.”

Heads whipped toward the entrance. Two local police officers, drawn by the commotion and the club manager’s call, stepped into the banquet hall.
Daniel finally moved. The beef gravy dripping from his chin onto his shoes didn't seem to matter anymore. Panic, raw and unfiltered, flooded his eyes. He realized in a single heartbeat that his entire house of cards had just collapsed.
