Chapter 5 - The Morning After

Sunday morning broke bright and cold, casting long shadows across the courtyard of my sprawling estate. The house was quiet—too quiet. Without Daniel pacing the hallways, complaining about his coffee or demanding his shirts be ironed just so, the air felt lighter, purer.

I stood in my gourmet kitchen, sipping black coffee, when the front doorbell rang.

Not a polite knock, but a frantic, hammering barrage.

I walked slowly to the heavy oak door and pulled it open. Standing on the porch was Margaret, her hair slightly disheveled, wearing a trench coat over her silk pajamas. Behind her stood Vanessa, looking like she had been crying for six hours straight.

“Emily!” Margaret gasped, trying to push her way past me into the foyer. “Thank God you’re here. This whole nightmare has gone entirely too far.”

I didn't move an inch. I blocked the doorway with my shoulder, my coffee mug cradled in both hands.

“You’re trespassing, Margaret,” I said evenly.

“Don’t be ridiculous!” Vanessa snapped, her voice shrill. “Daniel is sitting in a holding cell downtown! Do you have any idea what kind of humiliation he’s enduring? You need to call the police right now and tell them it was a misunderstanding—a marital dispute that got blown out of proportion.”

Margaret softened her tone, putting on her best matriarchal, condescending smile. “Listen to me, Emily. Families have disagreements. Daniel lost his temper, yes, but you provoked him with your attitude at the dinner. If you drop these charges, we can sweep this under the rug. We’ll even let you come to Sunday brunch next week.”

I stared at them for a long moment, letting the sheer absurdity of their entitlement hang in the air.

“Let me get this straight,” I said softly. “Your son physically assaulted me in front of forty witnesses, conspired with you to commit financial fraud, and you think I’m going to drop the charges so we can do brunch?”

“He is your husband!” Margaret hissed, her mask of civility cracking instantly. “You took vows! You are bound to him!”

“I was bound to a parasite,” I corrected her, my voice dropping an octave. “And as of eight o'clock this morning, my divorce attorney filed an expedited dissolution petition on grounds of physical abuse and financial malfeasance. Furthermore, Daniel is currently facing felony charges for domestic battery and wire fraud.”

Vanessa let out a shriek that echoed across the quiet neighborhood. “You can't do that! You’ll ruin his life!”

“He ruined his own life the moment he raised his hand against me,” I replied. “Now, get off my property before I call the same officers who arrested your golden boy yesterday.”
