Chapter 9 - The Unbroken Cipher

From the gloom beneath the choir loft, Victoria Lane emerged.
She wore a dark tailored coat, her blonde hair swept back, holding a gold-plated semi-automatic pistol. But she wasn't alone. Behind her stood four elite operators, their laser sights painting red dots across Gabriel’s chest.
"You're late, Caleb," Victoria purred, stepping into the dim light filtering through the altar window. "Did you really think I didn't have an access key to the church’s crypt tunnels? Your father-in-law was predictable to the end."
Gabriel stepped directly in front of Rachel, blocking every laser sight with his own torso. "Let her walk, Victoria. The Sterling ledger has every offshore account, every shell company, every corrupt judge in North America. Take the money. Take Chicago. Just let her walk."
"Oh, Caleb," Victoria laughed, a cruel, melodious sound that sent chills down Rachel’s spine. "You still don't understand the rules of the board. The ledger isn't just money. It’s an execution list. Julian documented every single crime the Lane family committed over three decades. If that ledger is broadcast to the federal authorities, my family ceases to exist by morning."
"Then destroy it!" Gabriel said, his voice taut. "I won't stop you."
"I intend to," Victoria replied, her eyes narrowing with poisonous hatred as she looked past Gabriel at Rachel. "Right after I watch the last Sterling choke on her own blood. You broke our contract fourteen years ago, Caleb. You were supposed to be my hound. You were supposed to secure the Rossi fortune and marry *me*. Instead, you looked at this pathetic, sheltered creature and dared to think you could be redeemed."
Victoria raised her weapon, aiming directly between Gabriel’s eyes. "Kill him first. Then bring her to the altar."
"Wait!" Rachel stepped out from behind Gabriel, holding her phone aloft.
On the screen, a digital countdown was ticking down from forty seconds. A green upload bar stood at ninety-two percent.
Victoria froze. "What is that?"
"My father didn't hide the ledger in the bell tower, Victoria," Rachel said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the vaulted nave. "The flash drive wasn't just a storage unit. It was a digital trigger. When Marcus decrypted the drive in the bunker, it automatically synced to the Chicago Federal Bureau of Investigation’s secure server. In thirty seconds, every transaction, every hit order, every murder your family commissioned—including my father’s—will be broadcast to every law enforcement agency on the planet."
Victoria’s composure shattered. "Shoot her! Shoot her now!"
Gunfire erupted inside the cathedral.
Gabriel moved like a shadow, tackling Rachel behind the massive marble baptismal font as high-caliber rounds chipped the stone into deadly shrapnel. Drawing his sidearm, Gabriel fired four blind shots around the pillar, hitting two of the operators.
"Gabriel, the bells!" Rachel shouted over the deafening roar of gunshots.
High above them, an ancient iron lever controlled the cathedral's five-ton bronze bells. Gabriel instantly understood. Aiming his weapon toward the shadowed rafters, he fired three consecutive rounds into the rusted support cable anchoring the central counterweight.
With a horrifying screech of tearing iron, the counterweight snapped.

A massive block of iron crashed fifty feet down through the wooden scaffolding above the choir loft, bringing down tons of oak beams, iron piping, and masonry directly onto Victoria’s operators. The cathedral shook as if struck by an earthquake, dust and pulverized mortar blinding the nave.
