Chapter 4 - The Bloodline Ledger

The freight elevator shuddered to a halt three levels beneath an abandoned meatpacking facility. Marcus led Rachel down a dimly lit concrete corridor into an armored bunker equipped with satellite monitors, emergency medical supplies, and racks of tactical firearms.

"Drink this," Marcus ordered, handing her a ceramic mug of steaming black coffee.

Rachel took it with numb fingers. She sat on the edge of a steel cot, her eyes fixed on the photograph she had laid out on the metal table.

In the picture, a twenty-two-year-old Gabriel stood in front of an offshore bank in Zurich. His arm was casually wrapped around Victoria Lane. But there was something chillingly different about him. The ruthless, calculated posture he held today was absent; instead, his eyes held the hollow, predatory deadness of a mercenary who had nothing left to lose.

"If he isn't Gabriel Rossi," Rachel said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady whisper, "then who is he?"

"His real name is Caleb Mercer," Marcus explained, pulling up a dossier on the main monitors. "Fourteen years ago, the real Gabriel Rossi died of a fentanyl overdose in an underground club in Vienna. The Rossi family patriarch, Vincent Rossi, was on the brink of losing his territory to your father’s syndicate. A dead heir meant unconditional surrender. So Vincent, partnered with the Lane family in London, bought Caleb out of a private military sector in Eastern Europe. They altered his dental records, carved identical scars onto his body, and spent twelve months training him to walk, talk, and kill like a true Rossi prince."

Rachel felt physically sick. Every kiss, every anniversary trip, every whispered promise of devotion in the dark of their bedroom flashed through her mind like a grotesque theater performance.

"And my father found out?"

"Julian was too sharp. Eight years ago, he cross-referenced a blood sample Gabriel gave after a minor car accident with the historical Rossi family archives. The DNA markers didn't match. Julian realized his daughter was married to an assassin under the direct control of the Lane syndicate."

"Then why didn't my father kill him?" Rachel slammed her cup onto the table, hot coffee spilling across the steel. "Why did he let me stay in that house? Why did he leave me to be paraded like an idiot for thirteen years?!"

"Because Caleb Mercer broke his leash," Marcus said quietly.

Rachel paused, her breathing ragged. "What?"

"Caleb fell in love with you, Rachel." Marcus tapped the screen, bringing up financial records spanning a decade. "Look at the accounts. Three weeks after your father confronted him, Julian died. The official story was an accident. But behind the scenes, Victoria Lane’s faction had placed the hit. Caleb didn't pull the trigger. In fact, he executed the three hitmen who did—and buried them in the foundations of the harbor. He spent the last eight years systematically bankrupting Victoria’s family, cutting her off from the Chicago ports, trying to scrub his own masters from existence."

"Then why tonight?" Rachel cried out, tears of fury finally breaking free. "Why slap me across the face in front of the entire city? Why parade Victoria as his mistress on our thirteenth anniversary?!"

Marcus’s expression hardened into grim pity. "Because at 9:30 tonight, Victoria Lane walked into Blackwood Manor with a detonation code. She discovered that Julian Sterling left a failsafe behind. She told Caleb that if he didn't publicly cast you out and sever the Sterling alliance tonight, her snipers would put a bullet through your head before the midnight toast."

Rachel touched her cheek. The phantom pain of the blow suddenly took on a sickening, horrifying dimension.

He hadn't humiliated her to assert dominance. He had humiliated her so every gun in the room would track his departure, giving her the narrowest window to run.

"He thinks he's playing the noble martyr," Rachel whispered, cold realization washing over her. "He thinks he can fight them alone."

May you like

"He cannot," Marcus replied grimly. "Because Victoria isn't working alone anymore. Look at the cameras, Rachel. They've already breached the perimeter."
