Chapter 7 - The Devil’s Confession

Rachel lowered the gun.

The silence in the bunker was suffocating. Gabriel looked at the lowered barrel, then up into her eyes, a mixture of disbelief and raw gratitude flickering across his bruised features.

"She doesn't have the ledger," Rachel said, her voice turning from trembling despair into razor-sharp authority. "The ledger isn't at Blackwood Manor. My father never trusted the estate."

Gabriel straightened up, his tactical instincts instantly resurfacing. "Where is it?"

"It’s in the only place Julian Sterling ever truly owned," Rachel said, turning her icy gaze down toward Marcus, who was writhing in pain against the blood-slicked wall. "The bell tower at St. Michael’s on the South Side. Where he married my mother. Where he baptized me."

Marcus looked up, his face gray with shock. "Julian... he swore that church was deconsecrated..."

"My father was smarter than all of you," Rachel said coldly. She stepped over to Marcus, retrieved her father's flash drive from the tablet, and looked at Gabriel. "We don't negotiate with Victoria Lane. We bury her."

Gabriel looked at his wife—not the pampered, shielded heiress he had spent thirteen years hiding from the shadows, but the true daughter of Julian Sterling, awakened by betrayal. A ghost of a proud, lethal smile touched his lips.

"Lucas is outside with the armored convoy," Gabriel said, offering her a tactical submachine gun. "Can you shoot something bigger than that revolver?"

Rachel racked the slide with practiced ease, a skill her father had secretly drilled into her during her teenage summers at the lake. "I can shoot anything with a heartbeat that threatens my family."

Twenty minutes later, three heavily armored Suburbans tore through the rain-drenched streets of Chicago, heading south toward St. Michael’s Cathedral.

Inside the lead vehicle, Gabriel sat beside Rachel, wrapping a tight sterile bandage around the cut on her jaw. His fingers were remarkably gentle, his touch radiating a familiar warmth that sent confusing shivers down her spine.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she asked quietly, looking out at the passing streetlights. "Years ago. When my father died. Why carry the lie alone?"

Gabriel tied off the bandage and dropped his hands into his lap. "Because Caleb Mercer is a monster, Rachel. He was forged in war trenches, trained to kill without conscience. But when Julian introduced me to you, for the first time in my life, I felt human. You looked at me without fear. You gave me a soul. I convinced myself that if you ever knew what I really was, you would look at me with the same horror the rest of the world did."

Rachel turned to him, her eyes dark and searching. "I survived thirteen years with a ghost, Caleb. What makes you think a monster would scare me?"

Before he could answer, the rear of their SUV was violently struck.
