Chapter 6 - Echoes of the Waterfront

Gabriel didn't look at Marcus. His burning, desperate eyes locked onto Rachel.

For three seconds, neither moved. The air between them was thick with gunpowder, thirteen years of shared lies, and a public slap that still burned like an open wound.

"Did he touch you?" Gabriel’s voice was dangerously low, a coiled wire waiting to snap.

Rachel stood up slowly, wiping blood from the corner of her lip. She picked up her father’s ivory-handled revolver from the floor and pointed it directly at Gabriel’s heart.

"Take one more step, Caleb Mercer, and I swear to God I will finish what my father started."

Gabriel stopped dead in his tracks. The mention of his real name struck him harder than any bullet ever could. The cold, ruthless mask of the Chicago mafia don cracked, revealing the shattered, haunted man underneath.

He slowly lowered his rifle and let it clatter onto the concrete floor. He raised both hands, palms open.

"Shoot me if you have to, Rachel," he said softly, his voice cracking with emotion. "I deserve it. I deserved it the moment I let them put Julian’s ring on your finger. But don't let this bastard win."

On the floor, Marcus spat blood, laughing through clenched teeth. "Look at him, Rachel! The great Balkan dog, brought to his knees by a woman’s tears! Tell her, Caleb! Tell her how you watched the harbor police fish her father's body out of the water and smiled because it meant your secret was safe!"

Gabriel didn't look away from Rachel’s gun. "I didn't kill Julian, Rachel. When I realized what Marcus had done, I wanted to tear him apart with my bare hands. But your father... before he died, he left me a message. He said that if I exposed Marcus, the syndicate would fracture into a civil war that would consume you. He begged me to protect you from the inside."

"By humiliating me?!" Rachel screamed, the barrel of the revolver wavering as tears blurred her vision. "By dragging that whore Victoria into our home?! By striking me in front of hundreds of people?!"

"Victoria had snipers positioned on the chandeliers above the ballroom, Rachel!" Gabriel’s voice broke into a desperate roar. "Every scope was trained on your chest! If I showed you tenderness, if I gave you an ounce of protection, she would have signaled the kill order! I had to make them believe you were worthless to me! I had to make you look like a discarded liability so they wouldn't waste a bullet while I cleared the exit!"

He took a step forward, his chest pressing against the barrel of her revolver.

"I took the strike, Rachel, because I couldn't bear to see you take a bullet. Shoot me. End it. But know that every breath I drew for thirteen years was lived solely to keep you alive in a world that wanted you dead."

Rachel’s finger trembled on the trigger. The cold metal of the gun radiated the weight of her father’s legacy. She saw the deep, agonizing sincerity in the eyes of the man who had loved her under a false name, who had walked through hell to stand between her and the wolves.

Suddenly, Gabriel’s tactical radio crackled to life from his vest.

Victoria Lane’s icy, mocking voice filtered through the static:

*"Caleb, darling. How romantic. Did you find your little widow? I hope you're enjoying your reunion, because my men just secured the waterfront district. And unless you bring me the Sterling ledger within twenty minutes, I will detonate the gas mains under your precious Blackwood Manor. Everything Julian built—and everything you bled for—will burn to ash."*
