Chapter 5 - A Traitor’s Mask

On the surveillance monitors, three black tactical SUVs glided to a halt outside the industrial complex above. Heavily armed men in unmarked combat gear poured out, breaching the reinforced doors with military-grade thermite charges.
"How did they find this place?" Rachel demanded, reaching for her father's revolver.
Marcus didn't answer. He was standing behind her, his hand resting on the grip of a suppressed 9mm pistol holstered at his hip.
The silence stretched too long.
Rachel turned slowly.
Marcus was not looking at the monitors. He was looking at the flash drive plugged into the tablet.
"You know, Rachel," Marcus said softly, his voice losing its tired, grandfatherly warmth and flattening into cold, predatory indifference, "your father was a brilliant man. But he had one fatal flaw: he believed blood loyalty could be bought with honor."
Rachel took a step back, her back hitting the edge of the steel table. "It was you."
"Your father was going to dismantle the entire syndicate," Marcus sneered, drawing his weapon and aiming it directly at her chest. "Fifty years of building the Sterling empire, and he wanted to liquidate it all just to keep you clean. To send you and his pet Balkan imposter to Europe to live like ordinary civilians. Do you have any idea how much money that would have cost us?"
"You killed him," Rachel said, her voice shaking with disgust. "You poisoned his drink on that boat. Not Victoria. Not Gabriel."
"Julian was weak," Marcus replied coldly. "He became obsessed with protecting you. Victoria Lane offered me fifty percent of the shipping lanes if I removed Julian and kept the imposter on a leash. For eight years, Caleb Mercer danced on my strings. He thought Victoria was the shadow boss. He never suspected that the man whispering advice in his ear was the one holding the blade to his spine."
The ceiling rattled as an explosion echoed through the elevator shaft above. The tactical strike team was clearing the upper floors.
"And now?" Rachel asked, her mind racing, calculating the distance between her hand and the scalpel lying on the medical tray beside the cot. "What happens to me?"
"You die here, a tragic casualty of the Rossi-Sterling feud," Marcus said, thumbing back the hammer. "And Caleb will burn the entire city to avenge you. While he and Victoria slaughter each other in the streets, I will walk into the ashes and claim the throne your father was too soft to keep."
"You forgot one thing, Marcus," Rachel whispered.
Marcus frowned slightly. "What?"
"My father didn't teach me how to be a mafia wife."
In a flash of pure adrenaline, Rachel hurled the ceramic mug of scalding coffee straight into Marcus’s face.
Marcus roared in pain, the suppressed pistol discharging into the concrete floor with a muted *phut*. Rachel lunged forward, driving the steel scalpel deep into his shoulder joint. He howled, dropping the gun, and swung a heavy fist that caught her across the jaw, sending her sprawling across the floor.
Footsteps thundered down the iron corridor outside.
The armored door of the bunker was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.
Through the smoke, a figure moved with lethal, terrifying speed. A single shot rang out.
Marcus collapsed against the wall, a bullet hole through his knee. He screamed, clutching his shattered leg.
Rachel scrambled backward, gasping for air, her hand clutching her bruised jaw.

Standing in the doorway, an automatic rifle held in a relaxed low-ready stance, his tuxedo shirt torn and stained with blood that was not his own, stood Gabriel.
