Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Safehouse

The wind off Lake Michigan tore through Rachel’s soaked silk coat like needles of ice. She moved through the shadows of the decommissioned marina, her feet bruised and bleeding against the jagged gravel.

Fifty yards ahead, parked under the rusted overhang of a warehouse crane, the dim amber running lights of a nondescript gray sedan cut through the swirling fog.

Rachel drew her father’s small ivory-handled revolver from the waistband of her slacks—a weapon she had retrieved from the hidden passage safe. Approaching the passenger side, she kept her finger off the trigger but leveled at the glass.

The lock clicked. The passenger door swung open.

"Get in before Rossi’s drones pick up your thermal signature," a gravelly, aged voice rasped from the gloom inside.

Rachel slipped into the heated cabin, her weapon remaining steady, pointed directly at the driver’s temple. "Who are you? How did you get my father’s private frequency?"

The interior light clicked on softly.

Rachel’s breath caught in her throat. Sitting behind the wheel was a man who had officially been declared dead six years ago: Marcus Vance, her father’s chief consigliere and the only man Julian Sterling had ever trusted with his family’s darkest secrets. His face was scarred, a jagged white line running from his left temple down into his gray beard, but the piercing steel-blue eyes were unmistakable.

"Marcus?" she breathed, the gun lowering an inch. "You... Gabriel told me you were killed in the warehouse fire in Detroit."

"Gabriel told you what he needed you to believe to keep you docile, child," Marcus said grimly, shifting the car into gear. The sedan rolled smoothly into the rain-slicked night, tires whispering against the asphalt. "If I had stayed in Chicago eight years ago, I would have shared your father’s watery grave."

"You think Gabriel killed him?" Her voice shook, the phantom sting of her husband’s slap still burning on her cheek. "Gabriel was by my side at the funeral. He held me while I wept. He spent millions tracking down the alleged syndicate responsible!"

Marcus reached into his coat and produced an encrypted tablet, sliding it onto Rachel’s lap. "Plug the flash drive in, Rachel. See with your own eyes what your husband spent thirteen years hiding behind that gilded wedding band."

Hands trembling violently, Rachel inserted the tiny black drive she had recovered from the safe. The screen flashed blue, demanding an eight-digit override code.

Without hesitation, Rachel entered the date stamped on the back of the photograph she had discovered: *10-14-2010*. The day Gabriel and Victoria were photographed together—a full year before Rachel had ever laid eyes on him at the charity gala where he had courted her.

The drive unlocked instantly.

Dozens of audio files, encrypted wire transfers, and medical autopsy reports cascaded down the screen. But one file sat pinned to the top, labeled in Julian Sterling’s precise hand: *PROJECT ICARUS: THE SURROGATE HEIR.*

Rachel tapped the audio file. Static hissed through the car’s speakers, followed by a voice that made her blood freeze.

It was her father, his tone weary, laced with a bitter regret she had never heard in life.

*"Log entry: September 4th. The boy who calls himself Gabriel Rossi is not Vincent Rossi’s legitimate son. He is a ghost from the Balkan black sites, trained by Victoria Lane’s father to infiltrate the Chicago families. I discovered the identity switch yesterday. But God help me, Rachel is already in love with him. If I expose him now, the Moretti cartel will butcher her to silence the lineage breach. I have no choice. I will play his game... until I find the leverage to tear his empire down without crushing my daughter in the ruins."*

The recording clicked off.

Rachel stared at the dashboard, the world tilting beneath her. "The boy who calls himself Gabriel... What does that mean?"

May you like

Marcus steered the car into a dark subterranean freight elevator in an industrial district miles away from the Gold Coast. "It means, Rachel, that the man you slept beside for thirteen years doesn't exist. And the wedding you celebrated tonight was never an alliance. It was a hostile takeover."
