Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Vipers

By afternoon, the estate resumed its facade of pristine luxury. Guests and associates arrived for a preliminary dinner celebrating our upcoming wedding. Among them was Victor Romano, stepping through the double doors with his signature charismatic smile, a bottle of rare 1982 Bordeaux in his hand.
“Dante, my brother!” Victor boomed, clapping a heavy hand onto my shoulder with theatrical warmth. “You look like a man who hasn't slept in a week. Let’s pour a glass and talk business before the festivities begin.”
I watched him closely, noting every micro-expression—the slight twitch near his left eye, the over-enforced casualness in his posture. “It has been a heavy week, Vic,” I replied smoothly, guiding him toward the private bar near the study. “Security concerns. It seems someone has been leaking our shipping manifests to rival syndicates.”
Victor didn’t flinch, but his fingers tightened fractionally around the neck of the wine bottle. “Rivals? In our city? Unthinkable. But don’t worry, brother, I’ll personally tear apart anyone inside our ranks who dares cross us.”
Isabella glided into the room moments later, wearing a stunning emerald-green gown that caught the chandelier light. She walked straight to Victor, kissing his cheek with a familiarity that went far beyond mere familial relation—a subtle, synchronized gesture of shared intent.
“Everything is proceeding according to schedule,” Isabella murmured softly, pouring herself a glass of champagne. Her eyes met mine across the room, carrying a silent challenge. She believed I was blind, shackled by affection and two years of shared history.

“Good,” I said, stepping closer to them both. “Because tomorrow, we are conducting a complete audit of the west wing archives. Every single file, every keycard log, every security camera feed from the past year will be reviewed in my presence.”
The silence that followed my words was absolute. The air grew dense, charged with a sudden, palpable terror. Victor’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, while Isabella’s wine glass trembled against her lips. They knew as well as I did that a full audit would unearth every hidden ledger, every stolen penny, and every treasonous plot they had woven behind my back.
