Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Archive

Dawn broke over the harbor with a pale, bruised light that offered no warmth to the Moretti estate. In the privacy of my private armory, I opened the floor safe beneath my desk and pulled out a leather-bound journal—an old ledger containing records of every internal audit, shipping discrepancy, and security report compiled over the last five years.

For two years, Isabella had played the role of the devoted, flawless fiancée. We had navigated elite galas, high-stakes political dinners, and delicate syndicate negotiations hand in hand. Yet, as I traced my fingers over the pages, a sickening pattern emerged. Shipments rerouted through undocumented docks; security rotations altered on nights when high-value cargo moved through the harbor; financial leaks pointing directly toward accounts registered under shell corporations in Zurich.

And at the center of every discrepancy was a single name: Victor Romano—Isabella’s cousin, and my most trusted right-hand man.

The realization tasted like ash. Victor was the man who had pulled me from the wreckage after my first wife’s tragic death, swearing an oath of eternal brotherhood. If Victor and Isabella were working in tandem to hollow out the Moretti empire from within, then the threat was not external—it was entirely domestic, festering at the very heart of my home.

Later that morning, Sophia knocked timidly on my study door, entering with a tray carrying my morning coffee. Her hands trembled slightly as she set the cup down.

“Mr. Moretti,” Sophia began, her voice barely a whisper, “about last night... Emma talks in her sleep sometimes, but she sees things. She’s seen that man before. Not just last night. Twice last week, when you were away in Sicily.”

I looked up from the ledger, my expression hard and unyielding. “Did she say anything else, Sophia?”

“Only that the man gave her sweets, and told her to keep quiet,” Sophia replied, her eyes welling with unshed tears. “Sir, I’m afraid for my little girl. And I’m afraid for you. There are things happening in this house that don’t belong to light.”

“Pack a bag for you and Emma,” I instructed quietly, sliding a heavy envelope of cash across the desk. “Take the car to the safe house in upstate New York by noon. Tell no one. Stay there until I call.”

Sophia stared at the envelope, her breath catching in her throat, before she nodded slowly and backed out of the room. I was alone once more, surrounded by the ghosts of a betrayal that had been brewing right under my nose.
