Chapter 9 - The Promise on Hanover Street

That evening, Elias took Addie for a walk down Hanover Street.

The rain had stopped, leaving the cobblestone streets glittering under the warm, golden glow of the gas streetlamps. The smell of fresh espresso, cannoli, and garlic drifted from the surrounding Italian trattorias.

They stopped in front of the building that had once housed Valente restaurant.

The old restaurant sign had been taken down. In its place stood a sleek, beautiful new sign: Adeline's Trattoria & Community Kitchen.

Addie gasped, turning to look at Elias in shock. "Elias... what is this?"

"I bought the lease from the bank," Elias explained, holding her hands in his. "We completely renovated the interior. Starting next month, it will operate as a high-end restaurant by night, and every morning, it will serve three hundred free meals to struggling families and shift workers across the North End."

Addie stared at the building where she had once collapsed in pain on a cold marble floor, tears spilling over her eyelashes.

"You turned a place of pain into a place of hope," she whispered, her heart overflowing with love.

"No," Elias corrected gently, reaching into his pocket. "You did that the moment you walked through those doors two years ago."

Elias dropped down on one knee onto the wet cobblestones of Hanover Street.

He produced a small black velvet box and opened it. Inside sat a magnificent pear-cut emerald ring surrounded by a halo of flawless diamonds—matching the color of the dress she had worn the night he realized he couldn't live without her.

"Adeline Prescott," Elias said, his baritone voice thick with raw, beautiful emotion. "You showed me that power without compassion is worthless. You saved my soul, protected my honor, and gave me a life worth living. Will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?"

Addie covered her mouth, a joyful sob escaping her throat.

"Yes!" she cried out softly, dropping to her knees beside him on the cobblestones. "Yes, Elias! A thousand times yes!"

Elias slipped the diamond ring onto her finger, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her with a fierce, passionate love that shattered every shadow of their past.

People on the street stopped and applauded, their cheers echoing down Hanover Street as the lovers held each other under the golden lights.
