Chapter 7 - Ambush in the Snow

The gala was an overwhelming triumph.

Elias officially announced the creation of the Prescott Community Fund—a ten-million-dollar endowment managed directly by Adeline to provide legal, medical, and financial aid to working-class women facing exploitation in Boston.

The applause in the ballroom was deafening as Addie took the microphone, speaking with grace, poise, and powerful emotion about her father's store and the strength of working families.

At midnight, as the guests began to disperse, Elias and Addie stepped out through the hotel’s private rear exit to wait for their car.

The snow was falling heavily now, blanketing the cobblestone alley in quiet white.

"You were incredible tonight," Elias murmured, pulling Addie close against his side to shield her from the biting winter wind.

"I had a good teacher," she smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder.

Suddenly, the engine of a dark sedan parked down the alley roared to life.

The headlights flashed blindingly, pinning Elias and Addie in two beams of harsh yellow light. The tires screeched against the icy pavement as the car accelerated at full speed directly toward them!

"Elias!" Addie gasped.

In a split second, Elias’s instincts took over. He grabbed Addie around the waist, lifting her off her feet and throwing both of them over the hood of a parked SUV just as the dark sedan slammed violently into the concrete wall where they had been standing seconds earlier!

The crash echoed through the alley like a cannon shot.

The sedan's driver door kicked open. A man wearing a dark ski mask stepped out, raising a heavy shotgun aimed directly at Elias!

It was Marco Valenti—the disgraced owner of Valente restaurant and a loyal associate of Uncle Silvio, seeking blood revenge for the destruction of their syndicate!

"Die, Baron!" Marco screamed, pulling the trigger!

BOOM!

Elias rolled across the snow-covered hood, pulling Addie behind his body as glass shattered everywhere. He drew his silver pistol from his tuxedo holster in one fluid, deadly motion and fired three times through the falling snow!

THUD! THUD! THUD!

The shots struck Marco square in the chest. The gunman collapsed backward into the snow, his weapon clattering harmlessly against the pavement.

Within seconds, Frank Moretti and four Baron security guards swarmed the alley, weapons drawn, securing the perimeter.

"Boss! Are you hit?!" Frank yelled, rushing over.

Elias stood up from the snow, wiping ice from his face. He didn't look at the dead gunman. He didn't look at Frank.

He dropped to his knees in the snow beside Addie, his hands frantically checking her face, arms, and dress for injury.

"Adeline! Adeline, look at me!" Elias pleaded, his voice trembling with a terror he had never shown in his entire life. "Are you hurt? Did the glass hit you?"

Addie sat up in the snow, breathless, staring at the man who had just risked his life to throw himself between her and a bullet.

"I'm okay, Elias..." she whispered, cupping his face in her hands. "I'm okay. You saved me."

Elias pulled her tight against his chest, burying his face in her neck, shaking violently as he held her in the freezing rain.

"I almost lost you," he choked out, his voice cracking with emotion. "I can lose the empire, the money, the family name... but I cannot lose you, Adeline."

Addie wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing his snow-dusted cheek. "You're never going to lose me, Elias. Never."
