Chapter 8 - Healing the Scars

The winter passed, giving way to the gentle warmth of an early Boston spring.

The final remnants of the corrupted Baron syndicate had been completely dismantled. Marco Valenti's associates were in prison, and the city’s underground knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Baron Empire was now a force of legitimate law, order, and community development.

At the Prescott Bookbinding Shop on Salem Street, the grand reopening was underway.

The wooden shelves had been beautifully restored, smelling of fresh leather, old paper, and beeswax. Rare vintage books lined the walls, and a new community reading area had been added near the front window.

Charlotte sat behind the counter, happily helping a customer, her college diploma framed proudly on the wall behind her.

In the quiet binding room at the back of the store, Addie sat at her father's old wooden workbench, carefully stitching the leather spine of an antique 19th-century medical atlas.

The door chimes jingled softly.

Elias walked into the back room. He wore a dark blue tailored suit, looking relaxed and strikingly handsome, carrying a small box tied with a white ribbon.

"Business looks good today, Miss Prescott," Elias smiled, leaning against the workbench.

Addie set down her needle, her eyes lighting up at the sight of him. "We sold three rare editions before noon. Dad would have been so proud."

Elias set the box down on her bench. "This came for you from the foundation's legal office."

Addie untied the ribbon and opened the box. Inside lay a thick, leather-bound book with gold foil lettering on the spine: The Prescott Foundation Annual Ledger.

She opened it. The first page contained a formal dedication written in elegant calligraphy:

To Adeline Prescott—Who proved that truth and courage are stronger than empires, and whose light brought justice to the dark.

Tears welled up in Addie's eyes as she read the words.

"You did that," Elias said softly, stepping closer and wrapping his arms around her waist from behind. "You changed me, Adeline. You changed this entire family."

Addie turned in his embrace, resting her hands against his chest, feeling the steady, warm beat of his heart.

"We changed each other, Elias," she whispered softly.
