Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Enzo realized there was no escape, no bargaining, and no mercy.
His face twisted in bitter desperation. He lunged toward his waist holster, pulling a compact snub-nosed revolver!
THWIP! THWIP!
Roman fired twice with his suppressed Beretta before Enzo’s gun could clear his jacket.
The bullets struck Enzo in both shoulders, knocking him backward into a stack of wooden lily crates. The crates shattered, covering the bleeding traitor in white petals.
Enzo groaned, holding his bloody shoulders, looking up at Roman in pure terror.
“I won't kill you in my wife’s shop,” Roman said coldly, stepping over the shattered wood. “That would pollute the only clean place she has left.”
Two Duca soldiers stepped through the back door, carrying heavy plastic zip-ties and black canvas hoods.
“Take him to the dockyard vault,” Roman ordered. “Hand him over to the federal authorities along with his complete record of human trafficking and extortion. Let him spend the next forty years in a federal supermax facility thinking about white roses.”
“Yes, Don Roman,” the soldiers grunted, dragging the sobbing traitor out through the back alley.

Roman stood alone in the dim flower shop for a moment.
He picked up a single, undamaged white rose from the floor, brushing the dust from its petals, and tucked it into his coat pocket.
