Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Flower Shop

Ten minutes later, the heavy black armored SUV pulled up outside Grace’s Blooms, a tiny, drafty shop located on a quiet side street six blocks away from the luxury district.

Inside, the shop smelled of damp soil, cold water, and dying stems. A single space heater hummed weakly in the corner.

Noah sat on a wooden stool, happily eating a warm chicken sandwich Gabriel had bought from a nearby deli, his small legs swinging back and forth.

Roman stood near the small front counter, watching Grace make tea with hands that would not stop trembling.

“How long has Enzo been coming here?” Roman asked softly, his coat off, revealing the shoulder holster beneath his dark suit.

“Every month on the fifteenth,” Grace murmured, setting a steaming mug on the counter. “He brings two guards. He reminds me that if I don't pay his 'tribute,' the Moretti family will find out where Noah goes to school.”

Roman stepped up behind her, placing his heavy, warm hands gently on her shoulders.

Grace flinched slightly, then leaned back into his touch, tears finally spilling onto her cheeks.

“I thought you left me, Roman,” she wept silently. “I thought you chose your empire over our family.”

“I left to save your life, Grace,” Roman whispered, resting his forehead against the back of her neck. “Enzo showed me fake intelligence reports showing sniper teams outside our house. He promised me he would keep you safe in secret while I dismantled the Moretti network from the shadows.”

“He tricked us both,” Grace said.

“Today is the fifteenth,” Roman said, looking at the clock on the wall. It read 3:15 p.m. “Enzo is meeting his captains at Aurelia right now, but he always collects his private debts afterward, doesn't he?”

Grace nodded slowly. “He comes here at four.”

Roman looked over at Noah, who was smiling as Gabriel showed him how a tactical flashlight worked.

“Gabriel,” Roman commanded, his voice turning to ice. “Take Grace and Noah to the safe house in Cambridge. Leave four men disguised as shop employees in the back alley.”

“And you, Boss?” Gabriel asked.

Roman pulled a steel magazine from his belt and snapped it into his Beretta with a heavy click.

“I am going to wait for my underboss.”
