Chapter 73 - The Bunker Beneath the Ashes

Before I could issue the intercept command to the Patriot missile batteries surrounding the District of Columbia, my secondary comms unit chimed with an encrypted flash-override. It was from the tactical recovery team deployed to the scorched ruins of our family ranch.

"Commander Carter, this is Captain Harris, Team Ironclad," the voice came through, distorted by the static of ionized air. "We've breached the perimeter of the Carter estate. You need to see this."

"Harris, I don't have time for a post-strike assessment, we have an inbound hypersonic weapon on the Capital—"

"Ma'am, with all due respect, you need to see this right now," Harris insisted. "We found Arthur Carter."

I froze. "My father?"

"We pulled him from a reinforced blast shelter twelve feet beneath what used to be the patio. He’s alive. Barely. But he’s not the only one here. We've tapped into the primary subterranean terminal in the launch trench. Jake didn't leave this place remotely. The terminal is running an autonomous neural loop."

"Put him on," I commanded, my voice flat.

There was a rustle of heavy tactical gear, the wet cough of a dying man, and then the ragged, broken breathing of Arthur Carter filled my ear.

"Elena...?" he wheezed. The arrogant patriarch, the man who had built an empire on crude oil, political intimidation, and family cruelty, sounded like an abandoned child. "Elena... is that you?"

"I don't have time to mourn your house, Arthur," I said cold as steel. "Did you know what Jake was building under the pasture?"

"I... I gave him the accounts," Arthur sobbed, blood rattling in his lungs. "He told me... he told me it was an offshore currency reserve. An underground gold repository to keep our liquid assets safe from the federal audits. I signed the land-clearing permits! I signed off on the heavy drilling equipment! He told me he was protecting the Carter legacy!"

"He just launched a hypersonic glide vehicle at Washington," I told him, each word deliberate, stripping away whatever remained of his pathetic vanity. "The Carter legacy is treason, Arthur. It’s mass murder."

"He locked me in the storm shelter," the old man wept openly. "When the alarms went off... he stood in the doorway. He looked at me, Elena. He laughed. He told me that everything I had ever done was a joke. He said I was an uneducated oil field roughneck who got lucky, and that he was going to burn the world I lived in."

"Did he leave a terminal? Is there a remote abort sequence?"

"No abort," Arthur coughed violently. "He left a phrase on the monitor before he sealed the hatch. He said... he said, 'Tell the soldier to look at the family bible.' Elena... what does that mean? What does he mean by the bible?"

The old leather-bound volume on our living room mantelpiece. The one my mother used to force us to swear upon before every business dinner.

"Harris," I barked into the tactical net. "Search the ruins of the master study. Find the safe behind the oil portrait of my grandfather. There’s a lockbox with physical family documents. Now!"

"Already on it, ma'am! We're blowing the safe hinges now!" A muffled *thump* echoed through the radio. "Safe breached! We have an old leather book... Commander, it's not a bible. It’s hollowed out."

"What's inside, Captain?"

May you like

"A military-grade cryptographic key card. Marked with the Department of Defense seal. Serial number: *Zero-Alpha-Valkyrie*."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Transmit the private cryptographic hex-code immediately to my console!"
