Chapter 70 - The Sovereign Abyss

My heart froze.

I turned back toward the destroyed dais.

In the center of the shattered room, a single, low-frequency auxiliary monitor had just flickered back to life. It wasn't powered by the severed geothermal line. It was running on an entirely independent, closed-circuit atomic battery.

A green terminal prompt was blinking steadily in the dark.

Bradley approached it slowly, shining his tactical light onto the glowing green phosphor text. His face, already pale from blood loss, drained of whatever color remained.

"Elena..." he whispered, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief. "This isn't Tartarus."

I stepped beside him, my scorched hands trembling as I stared at the lines of automated code scrolling across the screen:

`PROJECT CHRONOS: PHASE THREE INITIATED.`

`SECONDARY FAILSAFE RELAY UNSEALED: SECTOR 0-TEXAS.`

`SOURCE IDENTIFIER: CARTER FAMILY RESIDENCE — WEST TANK FARM SILO.`

The blood stopped in my veins.

The Texas homestead. The backyard barbecue. The sprawling, sun-baked grass where my brother had laughed in my face, holding his beer, asking if I was "still pretending to be a soldier." The ground my father had stood upon while calling me an embarrassment to the family name.

There was a missile silo buried beneath our family ranch.

And the terminal wasn't receiving a command. It was *transmitting* one.

The prompt blinked twice, and then a live audio stream connected.

It wasn't Eleanor. It wasn't Arthur.

A voice came over the speaker, distorted by an encryption filter, yet carrying a horrifyingly familiar, arrogant cadence that turned my blood to ice water.

"Did you really think I was that stupid, little sister?" Jake’s voice laughed through the static, completely devoid of the cowardice he had displayed in the interrogation room. "Mom thought she was the genius. Dad thought he had the money. But who do you think was signing the procurement orders for the concrete?"

On the monitor, an automated counter hit zero.

A satellite link flashed on, showing an aerial infrared view of the Texas ranch. The green grass of the backyard—the very lawn where my brother had poured beer on the dirt to mock my service—split cleanly down the middle, hydraulic doors grinding open under a cloud of dust.

Rising from the earth was a black, unmarked intercontinental launch vehicle, its warhead glowing with a radioactive signature that eclipsed anything Tartarus had built.

"Thanks for clearing the board for me, Elena," Jake’s voice whispered into the microphone, cold, precise, and completely sane. "Now... let me show you what a real Carter does with power."

The booster ignited.
