Chapter 28 - The Shattered Ring

We hit the access ladder to the docking bay just as a catastrophic tremor shook the entire foundation of Tartarus Deep.

The sound wasn't an explosion; it was the primeval, tectonic groan of the Earth itself tearing open. Six hundred feet above our heads, the kinetic penetrator had slammed into the canyon rim with the force of a small tactical nuclear warhead, minus the radiation. Billions of tons of rock, sediment, and deep-sea basalt were displaced in an instant, creating a massive underwater shockwave that hit the facility’s outer superstructure like a freight train.

The heavy steel bulkheads bowed inward. Rivets sheared off with the force of bullets, ricocheting through the staging bay with lethal velocity.

"Chen!" I yelled, shoving David through the lower hatch of the *Nautilus-X*. "Disconnect the hardline! We need to decouple right now!"

"I'm downloading the Chimera server archives!" Chen yelled back, his laptop vibrating violently on the docking console as seawater began spraying through seams in the hull overhead. "Director, if I cut the feed now, we lose the proof! We lose the link connecting Vance, your father, and the entire Pentagon consortium!"

"Download it to the sub's local drive and pull the cable!" I screamed, grabbing Chen by his tactical vest and literally throwing him through the hatch into the *Nautilus’s* cabin. "Miller, seal the dogs!"

Miller threw his weight against the locking wheel, spinning the heavy titanium latch until it clicked into the emergency lock position.

Outside the tiny viewport, the docking bay of Tartarus Deep was disintegrating. Giant steel girders snapped like toothpicks under the encroaching oceanic pressure. A wall of black water smashed through the outer blast doors, swallowing the entire chamber in a fraction of a second.

"Release the clamps!" I shouted, dropping into the co-pilot’s seat next to Miller. "Blow the auxiliary tanks!"

"Clamps are jammed!" Miller yelled, his hands flying across the controls as the sub was violently hammered against the docking cradle by the incoming torrent of water. "The structural collapse twisted the magnetic ring! We're tethered to the station!"

Through the forward viewport, I saw the main facility dome sheer off its moorings. It was tumbling into the abyssal canyon below, dragging its umbilical conduits—and our docking collar—down into the lightless trench with it.

If we went over that ledge while still attached to the habitat, the *Nautilus-X* would be dragged past its crush depth in less than ninety seconds.

"David," I said, my voice dead calm despite the alarms deafening us inside the cockpit. "The emergency release. Where is the physical decoupler on this prototype?"

David was lying on the deck of the cabin, his back propped against the bulkhead, his chest heaving. He pointed a trembling, bloodstained finger toward a red mechanical lever recessed into the floor beneath the secondary battery housing.

"The... the manual pyro-pin," he whispered. "It uses a magnesium core... to burn the magnetic latch from the inside. But someone has to hold the contact down... the automatic relay is dead."

I looked at the lever. It was located inside an unshielded battery compartment. Whoever engaged the manual burn would be exposed to forty-eight volts of direct electrical discharge and superheated chemical blowback.

Miller reached for his harness. "I'll do it, Ma'am—"

"No, Miller," I commanded, shoving him back into the pilot’s chair. "You're the only one who can fly this tub through the underwater landslide. Keep your hands on the thruster controls."

I dropped to the floor, grabbing the steel lever with both hands.

"Emily... no..." David croaked, reaching out to stop me, but he was too weak.

"Seven years, David," I said, looking over my shoulder at my brother, my eyes blazing with absolute, unyielding resolve. "You protected me from him when we were kids. It’s my turn."

I slammed the lever down and locked my weight over it.

A blinding flash of white magnesium fire detonated through the floorplate. A surge of high-voltage current ripped through the lever, coursing through my arms, seizing every muscle in my torso in a violent, agonizing spasm. The smell of burning rubber and scorched Kevlar filled my nostrils. I screamed through clenched teeth, my knuckles white, refusing to let go, holding the pin against the contact as the fire burned through the outer docking ring.

*CLANG-BOOM!*

The explosive pins fired outside the hull. The magnetic clamp sheared away.

The *Nautilus-X* was violently kicked backward by the explosive decompression, tumbling into the open water of the canyon as the ruins of Tartarus Deep plunged into the bottomless abyss below.

The current died. I collapsed onto the steel deck, gasping for air, my hands smoking and blistered, but my heart still beating.

"We're free!" Miller yelled, his hands fighting the control stick as the sub’s cold-gas thrusters fired at maximum yield. "Buoyancy tanks blowing! We are ascending! Repeat, we are ascending!"
