Chapter 20 - The Ghost in the Wire

I stepped inside the carrier's island structure, entering an empty, sound-dampened briefing room. I unclipped my secure comm-pad and tapped the flashing red icon.

"Director Carter," came the voice of the Deputy Secretary of Defense. The tone of his voice was not celebratory. It was tight, strained, and filled with an edge of quiet horror.

"Mr. Secretary," I responded. "The node on the *Mendoza Star* has been neutralized. The carrier group's acoustic corridor is fully restored. The Carter logistics network has been excised."

"Emily... we have a catastrophic problem," the Deputy Secretary said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The FBI forensics team finished breaking open the secondary encrypted partition on Jake's personal server an hour ago. The part he didn't even know existed."

My instincts flared, every nerve ending in my body going on high alert. "What was on it?"

"Jake wasn't running this network for a foreign government, Emily. He was being handled. Puppeteered from the very beginning."

"Handled by who?"

"The data payloads weren't being sent to Beijing or Moscow. They were being routed through an IP address assigned to an internal, black-budget DARPA research project that was officially decommissioned seven years ago."

The air left my lungs. "Which project?"

"Project Chimera," the Secretary said. "The deep-cover black operations unit that was completely wiped out in the Mediterranean during the 2017 raid on Tartus. The unit your older brother, David, was commanding when his transport was shot down."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. David. My oldest brother. The only person in that cursed Carter household who had ever loved me, the one who had protected me from my father’s cruelty until the day he was reported killed in action, his body never recovered from the burning wreckage of his helicopter.

"David is dead, Mr. Secretary," I said, my voice shaking for the first time in ten years. "I attended his memorial. I stood by the empty casket."

"Then you need to explain what we just intercepted, Director," the Secretary whispered. "Because three minutes ago, the moment the *Mendoza Star* sank, an automated distress transmission pinged our tactical net from an unregistered deep-sea research installation located six hundred feet beneath the Mariana Trench."

The tablet in my hands vibrated violently. The screen cut out, overridden by an incoming analog audio transmission heavily distorted by deep-water hydro-acoustic interference.

Then, through the static and the oceanic hum, a voice spoke through my headset—a voice that was low, raspy, scarred by burns and years of silence, but completely, unmistakably familiar.

*"Emily... if you're hearing this, you've survived Jake's mess,"* the voice whispered through the crackling wire. *"Listen to me very carefully. Dad didn't just co-sign those shipping bonds for money. He sold me out seven years ago... and the people holding me down here are waiting for you."*

May you like

The signal went dead.

I stood frozen in the middle of the steel room as the carrier’s alarms began to sound across the deck.
