Chapter 4 - Turbulence Before Takeoff

The massive Boeing 777 taxied away from the gate, its four massive jet engines roaring as it aligned with the active runway. Inside the cabin, the safety briefing played on overhead monitors, ignored by most, but watched intently by Amara, who used the moment to center herself.

She could feel Jennifer’s palpable hostility radiating from the seat beside her. It was like sitting next to a live electrical wire humming with unstable voltage. Every time Amara shifted her position or turned a page in her notebook, Jennifer let out an exaggerated sigh of annoyance, shifting her shoulders to crowd Amara’s personal space.

"Ten minutes to cruising altitude," the captain’s calm, authoritative voice echoed through the cabin intercom. "Flight attendants, please prepare for service."

As soon as the seatbelt sign chimed off with a soft double-tone, the premium cabin service began. Flight attendants rolled out the heavy meal carts, offering warm nuts, champagne, and freshly brewed coffee from ceramic carafes.

Jennifer leaned forward, intercepting a flight attendant who was carrying a tray of hot beverages.

"Bring me a coffee. Black. Extra hot," Jennifer demanded, eyeing Amara out of the corner of her eye with a malicious glint.

The attendant quickly poured a porcelain cup of steaming dark liquid and handed it over. Jennifer took the cup, her fingers curling around the handle. Instead of placing it securely on her own fold-out tray table, she held it in her lap, turning her body deliberately toward the aisle as if preparing to stand up.

"Pardon me," Jennifer muttered loud enough for the surrounding rows to hear.

As she stepped out into the aisle to let a passenger pass, she didn't just walk—she deliberately swung her elbow backward, pivoting her entire body so that the heavy ceramic cup tilted violently.

Splash!

A torrent of scalding hot coffee erupted from the cup, slamming directly across the back of Amara’s hand and soaking straight through the fine wool of her charcoal dress.

A sharp, searing pain shot up Amara’s arm. She gasped, dropping her pen as her skin flared an angry, blistering red.

"Careful! It's boiling!" a businessman from Row 3 exclaimed, leaping half out of his seat in alarm.

Amara pressed her hand against her chest, wincing as the heat burned through her skin. But before she could even grab a napkin from the armrest, Jennifer turned around, wearing a mask of cold, unrepentant cruelty.

"It's her own fault," Jennifer replied loudly, her voice devoid of an ounce of remorse. "Clumsy little fraud. Maybe next time she'll sit where she belongs."

And then, before anyone could process the sheer audacity of the statement, Jennifer raised her right hand and brought it down across Amara’s cheek with a sharp, echoing crack.
