Chapter 8 - The Arraignment and Psychological Unraveling

The courtroom of the New York State Supreme Court was packed to capacity on the morning of Harper’s formal arraignment. Because of my ongoing physical therapy and spinal stabilization requirements, I attended via a secure video feed from a private conference room at the rehabilitation institute, with David sitting right beside me, holding my hand.
On the courtroom monitor, Harper looked a shadow of her former self. The immaculately styled blonde hair was unwashed and pulled back into a messy knot; the designer clothes were replaced by an orange inmate jumpsuit. Her face was hollow, drained of the arrogant self-assurance that had defined her entire life.
As the presiding judge read through the staggering list of felony charges—attempted murder in the first degree, malicious wounding, financial fraud, and forgery—Harper’s defense attorney entered a formal plea of not guilty, citing mental duress and emotional instability.
Then, the prosecution presented its opening evidence package: the metallurgical report matching the steel drift-pin to Harper’s lathe, the bank statements proving her desperate gambling debts, the life insurance policy naming her as sole beneficiary, and the blueprint seized from her storage unit.
When the judge asked the defendant if she wished to make a statement before remand, Harper slowly stood up at the defense table. Her eyes locked onto the courtroom camera that was broadcasting directly to my conference room screen.
"It's not fair," Harper whispered into the microphone, her voice trembling with venomous rage rather than remorse. "She always took everything! Dad's affection, the real estate portfolio, the perfect life! I was just reclaiming what should have been mine!"
The courtroom erupted into murmurs of absolute shock at her public confession. The judge banged his gavel sharply, his face stern with righteous indignation.
"Silence in the courtroom!" the judge commanded. He looked down at Harper with cold disdain. "Ms. Lin, your complete lack of remorse, combined with the overwhelming forensic evidence presented by the state, demonstrates a chilling depravity. You are remanded to custody without bail until the commencement of trial. Court is adjourned."

On the monitor, two court officers grabbed Harper by the arms and hauled her away as she let out a shrill, hysterical shriek that echoed off the courtroom walls before the feed cut to black.
David let out a long, shuddering breath, resting his forehead against my shoulder. "It’s over, Sarah. She’s never getting out."
