Chapter 6 - Gathering the Threads

In the weeks following Harper’s dramatic arrest in my hospital room, the pace of my life shifted from acute medical trauma to the slow, grinding labor of physical and legal reconstruction.

David was by my side every single day. The emotional chasm that Harper’s betrayal had briefly opened between us had closed, replaced by a fierce, unshakable bond forged in the fires of shared trauma. He spent his evenings reading legal briefs from the district attorney’s office and helping me coordinate with forensic accountants to untangle the web of financial fraud Harper had woven behind our backs.

"The district attorney’s office just filed formal indictments," David announced one sunny afternoon, setting a stack of legal documents on the over-bed table. He pulled up a chair and took my hand, his thumb gently stroking my knuckles. "Attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault resulting in permanent disability, forgery, and wire fraud. With the physical evidence from the metal lathe, the metallurgical match on the drift-pin, and her manifesto of financial grievances found on her laptop, her defense attorney is advising her to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty or life without parole."

I nodded slowly, looking out the large window at the Manhattan skyline glittering in the autumn sunlight. "Let her plead. I don't want to sit through a grueling trial and watch her perform her fake tears for a jury. I just want closure."

"You're getting it, love," David said softly. Then, a smile broke across his face. "And speaking of moving forward... Dr. Thorne and your physical therapists signed off on your discharge to the inpatient rehabilitation institute starting Monday."

The news sent a thrill of electric hope through my chest. For weeks, my world had been confined to sterile hospital walls and the wheels of a motorized chair. Moving to the rehabilitation institute meant stepping onto the battlefield of physical recovery—learning to navigate a new reality, building core strength, and working with advanced robotic exoskeleton braces to retrain my surviving neural pathways.

"I'm ready," I said, my voice firm with renewed determination. "Let's do it."
