Chapter 4 - The Investigation Unspools

Within forty-eight hours of Investigator Vance’s visit to my hospital room, the polite facade of my family dynamic was blown wide open. The state troopers moved with methodical, terrifying efficiency, turning Harper’s pristine, minimalist luxury condo in downtown Manhattan into a forensic crime scene.

I was transferred from the intensive care unit to a private rehabilitation room, where physical therapists began the agonizing work of assessing the permanent damage to my lower body while detectives gathered pieces of a puzzle I was uniquely qualified to solve.

Investigator Vance returned on a rainy Thursday afternoon, carrying a thick manila folder and a digital tablet. He pulled a chair up to my bedside, nodding respectfully to David, who sat quietly in the corner, looking like a man whose soul had been eviscerated.

"We executed a search warrant on Ms. Harper Lin’s residence early this morning," Vance said, opening the folder. "And frankly, Ms. Lin, your professional background as a failure analysis engineer saved us weeks of guesswork."

"What did you find?" I asked, my voice steady despite the residual ache in my spine.

Vance tapped the folder. "We found a fully equipped metal lathe and milling machine set up in her second-bedroom walk-in closet. Along with metal shavings matching the metallurgical composition of the drift-pin extracted from your spine, we found receipts from an industrial supply warehouse in Queens dated three weeks before the wedding. She bought three custom-machined carbon steel pins of identical specifications."

David buried his face in his hands, letting out a ragged groan. "She bought them three weeks ago... while we were planning the rehearsal dinner. While she was helping Sarah pick out flower arrangements."

"It gets worse, Mr. Sullivan," Vance continued, sliding a printed financial statement across the tray table. "Bank records show that Harper accumulated over four hundred thousand dollars in high-interest gambling debts over the past year. Two months ago, she took out a clandestine life insurance policy on Sarah—naming herself as the primary beneficiary in the event of an 'accidental catastrophic wedding mishap,' leveraging a family trust clause that transfers all real estate holdings to the surviving sibling if the primary heir passes away or is rendered permanently incapacitated."

The room went dead silent. The final, brutal pieces clicked into place. Harper hadn't just wanted to ruin my wedding out of sibling rivalry or petty jealousy; she had orchestrated a cold-blooded assassination disguised as a vintage fashion tragedy to bail herself out of financial ruin and inherit the multi-million-dollar real estate trust our father had left to me.

"Where is she?" I asked quietly.

"We have an all-points bulletin out," Vance replied, closing the folder with a sharp snap. "Her luxury condo was abandoned ten minutes before our tactical team breached the door. She rented a black SUV under an alias and cleared out her offshore accounts. But she won't get far, Ms. Lin. Every state trooper from here to the Canadian border is looking for her."
