Chapter 8 - The Cornered Predator

By Friday morning, the legal noose had tightened into a garrote.
Julian sat in Charles Albright’s conference room, his tie undone, the shadows under his eyes looking like bruises. The U.S. Attorney’s Office had formally executed search warrants on his personal residence, seizing three laptops, encrypted thumb drives, and a safe-deposit box containing half a million dollars in untaxed bearer bonds.
Across the glass table sat Victoria Sterling and me, accompanied by an army of financial auditors.
"This is an informal proffer," Albright said, his voice entirely drained of its former courtroom bravado. "My client is prepared to sign an immediate, complete waiver of all claims to Lewis Construction Solutions. He will vacate all claims to marital equity. In exchange, Mrs. Lewis will petition the U.S. Attorney’s office for leniency and drop the civil embezzlement lawsuit."
Julian looked at me, his eyes bloodshot, desperate, pleading.
"Eve... please," he croaked. "We were married for nine years. We have two beautiful kids. Yes, I made a mistake with Rosalind—she threw herself at me! She seduced me, Eve! She told me you didn't care about me anymore, that you were married to the company! I was weak!"
I didn't blink. "You were weak for fourteen consecutive months? In four different hotel chains?"
"I was lost!" he cried, reaching across the table. Victoria slapped his hand away with a pen.
"Do not touch my client, Mr. Lewis," Victoria said coldly.
Julian buried his face in his hands. "Eve, they're talking about ten to fifteen years in Terre Haute. Federal prison! Do you want your children's father to be a felon?! What will people say at their school?!"
"My children will learn that actions have consequences," I replied. "They will learn that theft, betrayal, and cowardice do not get rewarded with a multi-million-dollar payout. And as for what people will say? They will say that their mother was strong enough to protect them from a criminal."
Albright sighed deeply, pushing a blue folder toward Victoria. "What are your terms, Victoria?"
"Unconditional surrender," Victoria said, not even looking at the papers. "One: Full, permanent sole legal and physical custody of Leo and Maya, with Julian Lewis terminating his parental rights entirely."
Julian flinched as if struck with an iron rod. "Terminate my rights?! Never!"
"Two," Victoria pressed on remorselessly, "Julian will surrender all personal assets, including his pension, his personal stock portfolio, and his luxury watch collection, to be liquidated into a restitution fund for the South District Bridge repairs."
"I'll have nothing!" Julian yelled. "I'll be bankrupt! I'll be homeless!"
"Three," I said, leaning forward. "You will provide a sworn, notarized deposition detailing Rosalind Vance's direct involvement in the laundering of the Rosebud Holdings funds."
Julian stopped. He looked up, his jaw slack. "What?"
"You heard me," I said softly. "Rosalind claimed in court that she was an innocent victim. She told our parents she knew nothing about the money. She threw you under the bus, Julian. She told Mother that you forced the credit cards into her hands."
A dark, dangerous spark ignited in Julian’s eyes. The classic narcissist’s reflex: when drowning, pull the nearest person down to use as a raft.
"She said that?" Julian hissed, his teeth grinding together. "That little viper? She was the one who asked for the Aston! She told me if I didn't buy it, she'd tell you about our weekend in Miami!"
"Give me the deposition," I said, sliding a pen across the table. "Sign the confession detailing her co-conspiracy, and I will instruct my corporate counsel not to pursue civil treble damages against your personal bankruptcy estate."
Julian didn't hesitate for more than three seconds.

He grabbed the pen.
