Chapter 36 - The Zurich Wire

The foyer cleared, leaving only the scent of melting snow and wet wool.

I walked back into my private study. The fire in the hearth was burning down to white ash. On my desk, the secure terminal was flashing with an incoming encrypted satellite transmission.

The display read: *FEDERAL DETENTION FACILITY — EMBASSY LIAISON SECURE LINE.*

I tapped the key and put the earpiece in.

"She didn't spend three hours in that cell, did she?" I said without greeting.

"Good morning, Clara," Helena’s voice came through the receiver, crystalline and sharp, completely devoid of static. "The Swiss ambassador personally delivered the letter of recall. I am currently seated in the executive lounge at JFK, waiting for clearance on a diplomatic flight to Geneva."

"Harrison is in federal custody, Helena. He’s looking at twenty years for judicial treason and tax evasion. He will die in a cell."

"Harrison was eighty-two years old and suffered from prostate cancer," Helena dismissed casually. "He served his purpose. He flushed out your federal contacts and forced you to show your hand. You have the IRS, you have the regional CID, and you have private muscle. Impressive for a woman who spent the last seven years picking out nursery drapes."

"I have the black cipher, Helena. I have every single account, shell corporation, and shadow ledger you built between 1984 and yesterday."

"Do you?" Helena chuckled. "Check account ending in 904-Omega, darling."

My fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard. The cipher decrypted the Zurich node. A series of red rejection codes cascaded across the monitor.

*ACCESS DENIED — INITIATIVE 44 ACTIVE.*

*CURRENT ASSETS FROZEN: $42,800,000,000.*

*REQUIRES DUAL BIOMETRIC AUTHORIZATION: CLARA VANCE & HELENA STERLING-VANCE.*

"You see, Clara," Helena said, her tone purring like a panther basking in the sun, "the Sterling-Vance wealth cannot be split. It was established under the Geneva Imperial Protocols of 1922. It requires two sovereigns. Either we sit at the table together and govern the global assets as grandmother and granddaughter... or the entire fortune defaults to a sovereign wealth trust in Bern, and you spend the rest of your life fighting for pennies in international maritime court."

"I don't need your seventy billion, Helena. I built my own portfolio before I ever touched the trust."

"Your portfolio is sixty million, Clara. Pocket change. That might buy you security guards and private tutors. But it will not protect your children when the European board comes to collect on the notes Julian signed."

My breath caught in my throat. "What notes?"

"You didn't think Julian only borrowed four hundred million, did you?" Helena whispered. "Julian signed an indemnity bond using Christian and Maya’s legal trusts as collateral. The lenders are not banks, Clara. They are sovereign creditors from the Caspian syndicate. And they don't accept checks."

The line went dead with a hollow tone.
