Chapter 35 - The Phantom Ultrasound

Captain Briggs didn't hesitate. He stepped behind Vanessa, ignored her screeching protests, and yanked the oversized quilted Chanel bag from her shoulder.

"Get your hands off my property! That’s an invasion of privacy!" Vanessa shrieked, clawing at his tactical vest. Briggs simply held her back with one forearm and tipped the contents of the bag onto the mahogany console table.

A wallet. Four lipsticks. A pack of cigarettes. A half-empty bottle of prescription Xanax.

And an embossed medical folder from the Manhattan Fertility Institute.

I walked down the remaining stairs, the heels of my boots clicking rhythmically, stopping three feet from Vanessa. I picked up the folder and opened it.

"Page three," I murmured, scanning the documents. "A blood test dated three weeks ago. Negative for human chorionic gonadotropin. A prescription for synthetic hormones to mimic pregnancy weight gain. And an invoice for twenty-five thousand dollars paid to an ultrasound technician in Queens for a forged digital record."

Silence fell over the foyer like a guillotine.

Julian slowly lifted his head from the floor, his swollen eyes darting between me and Vanessa. "What? Vanessa... what is she talking about?"

Vanessa backed away, her face draining of all color, until her shoulders hit the wall. "Julian, she’s lying! She paid them off! Clara owns the labs!"

"I don't own this lab, Vanessa," I said, tossing the medical report directly into Julian’s lap. "You didn't want a child. You wanted a hostage. You wanted an eighteen-year annuity paid out of my foundation to fund your lifestyle when Julian’s worthless career went up in smoke."

Julian stared down at the documents, his hands trembling violently. "You... you told me the baby was why we had to demand the three-million-dollar monthly stipend. You told me it was a boy."

"She played you, Julian," I said, looking down at him with genuine, pitying disgust. "Just like Helena played you. You were a pawn used by three different women who all saw you for exactly what you are: a handsome, weak, spineless parasite."

Julian let out a broken, guttural sound and lunged at Vanessa. "You bitch! You ruined my life! I had a career! I had Clara!"

Briggs and another guard stepped in instantly, catching Julian by his collar and shoving him to the floor, pinning him with a knee to his spine.

"Arthur. Evelyn," I said, turning to my parents. "The house in the Hamptons? Seized this morning by the foreclosure referee. The trust accounts that paid your club dues and your gardener? Dissolved under the anti-fraud provisions of the Lewis trust. By noon, your credit cards will stop working."

My mother sank onto the bottom step, weeping into her palms. "What are we supposed to do, Clara? Where are we supposed to go?"

"You have two hands, Evelyn. And Arthur still has his law degree, though I suspect the bar association will revoke his license by Friday," I said, stepping back toward the stairs. "Get out of my house."

"Clara, please!" my father begged, reaching out a trembling hand. "We’re your family!"

"My family," I said, pausing on the third step and looking back over my shoulder, "is upstairs asleep. You four are just ghosts who haven't realized they’re dead yet."

"Throw them out the gate," I ordered Briggs. "And if any of them approaches the perimeter again, shoot on sight for criminal trespass."
