Chapter 34 - The Beggar at the Iron Gate

By dawn, the snow on Highwood’s lawn had been churned into black mud by the tires of forty federal vehicles.

Chief Justice Harrison Vance had been transported to a high-security federal detention facility in lower Manhattan. But Helena Sterling-Vance was nowhere to be found in the processing reports; her diplomatic passport, granted through a phantom commercial treaty in the 1990s, had forced the federal marshals to hold her in an embassy annex under administrative detention.

The battle wasn't over. It had simply shifted from an ambush to trench warfare.

Downstairs in the grand foyer, the front door swung open with a sickening rattle.

I stood at the top of the sweeping marble staircase, wearing an emerald cashmere sweater, black trousers, and my grandfather’s signet ring on my right hand. Christian and Maya were upstairs under the protection of eight armed private operators I had flown in from Virginia at 3:00 AM.

Standing in the foyer, dripping melting snow onto the marble, were my parents, Arthur and Evelyn Vance.

And behind them, looking like a pair of drowned rats dragged out of a sewer, were Julian and Vanessa.

Julian’s face was bruised from his holding-cell altercation two nights prior. His bespoke Brioni coat was gone, replaced by a cheap, ill-fitting wool jacket with a torn pocket. Vanessa looked utterly manic—her designer highlights greasy and unwashed, her mascara smeared beneath hollow, bloodshot eyes.

"Clara!" my mother Evelyn cried out, taking a frantic step forward, her voice trembling with theatrical grief. "Thank God you’re alive! They told us... they said federal agents stormed the house! They said Uncle Harrison was here!"

"Stop right there, Evelyn," I said, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling like a whip. "You cross that threshold another inch, and the guards behind you will escort you to the gate in zip-ties."

My father Arthur’s face turned scarlet. "Clara, that is enough! We are your parents! Your sister has lost everything! Julian’s accounts have been frozen, their apartment was seized by the bank at midnight, and your mother has a heart condition! Show some goddamn humanity!"

I slowly descended three steps, looking down at the four of them with complete, unadulterated revulsion.

"Humanity?" I murmured. "Where was your humanity, Arthur, when you handed Julian the legal authorizations to bleed my trust dry while I was pregnant with Maya?"

Arthur choked on his words, his jaw slackening.

"You knew," Vanessa whispered suddenly, stepping forward, her fingers trembling as she pointed a chipped, manicured nail at me. "You knew Helena was alive. You set us up! Julian didn't steal that money on his own—he thought he was working for the family trust! You let him walk into a federal trap!"

Julian fell to his knees on the cold marble, burying his face in his hands. "Clara, please... I’ll sign whatever you want. I’ll renounce every dime. Vanessa is pregnant, Clara! She’s carrying my child! We have no place to sleep! The hotel cards declined!"

I looked down at Julian, the man who had slept in my bed for seven years, the man who had smiled at our children while plotting to have me declared mentally incompetent so he and my sister could feast on my grandfather's bloodline.

"Vanessa is pregnant?" I asked softly, tilting my head.

Evelyn burst into tears. "Yes! Your own niece or nephew, Clara! How can you be so cruel? Give them the carriage house at the estate. Just until the hearings are over!"

"Check her handbag, Captain," I said coldly to the head of my security detail standing by the door.
