Chapter 28 - Midnight at the Harbor

Before Sterling’s hand could clear the lapel of his charcoal coat, the double doors of the executive suite were blasted off their hinges.
*BANG.*
A concussion flash grenade detonated in the reception foyer, sending a blinding shockwave of white light and thunderous pressure through the room. Eleanor shrieked, falling to the carpet. Arthur curled into a fetal ball beneath the sideboard.
Through the smoke, four tactical operators from the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team poured into the room, their suppressed carbines leveled, laser sights painting crimson geometric grids across Sterling’s chest.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! ON THE GROUND! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!"
Sterling froze, his hand still inside his jacket. His eyes met mine through the haze of smoke. A terrible, ancient defiance burned in his gaze—the arrogance of a man who believed that empires were beyond the reach of human law.
"Drop the cane, Sterling," I said quietly, stepping behind the reinforced titanium modesty panel of the desk.
Slowly, deliberately, Sterling let the gold-tipped cane fall. It struck the marble trim with a heavy, hollow thud. Two operators tackled him to the floor with bone-crushing force, wrenching his arms behind his back, the sharp zip of heavy plastic flex-cuffs slicing through the chaos.
Julian tried to bolt toward the private service elevator in the rear corridor.
He didn't make it three steps.
Frank Briggs stepped out of the blind corner, his fist moving in a short, brutal arc that connected squarely with Julian’s jaw. The sound of cartilage breaking echoed in the room. Julian flew backward, crashing into the glass credenza, his face a bloody, ruined mask as two more federal marshals pinned him to the floor, driving their knees into his spine.
"Julian Vance," Agent Miller announced, stepping into the room with her badge raised, her trench coat swirling around her boots. "Your habeas release has been vacated under Title 18, Section 3148. You are remanded to federal custody without bail. Arthur Lewis, Eleanor Lewis—you are both under arrest for conspiracy after the fact, obstruction of justice, and international wire fraud."
My mother looked up from the floor, her eyes wide with hysterical disbelief. "You can't arrest me! I am Eleanor Vance Lewis! I am on the board of the Metropolitan Opera! Arthur, tell them!"
Arthur said nothing. He simply wept into the carpet, his spirit completely obliterated.

As the agents hauled Julian to his feet, he spat blood onto the floor, glaring at me with the feral, impotent rage of a defeated predator. "You think you won, Clara? You think this is over? You’re alone! You destroyed your whole family! You have nobody left!"
"I have my children, Julian," I said, looking him dead in the eyes. "And unlike you, they will grow up knowing their mother never surrendered."
