Chapter 5 - The Morning After

Dawn broke over the city, casting a cold, gray light across the glass towers of Cole Enterprises. But there were no workers entering the building today. Instead, federal marshals stood at the main doors, posting massive yellow seizure notices across the brass entrance.
Inside the Cole estate, the atmosphere was funereal. Richard Cole sat in his study, staring blankly at a blank television screen. Margaret had locked herself in her bedroom, refusing to open the door for anyone. Adrian stood at the window, watching federal agents load boxes of financial records into unmarked vans parked on the circular driveway.
The door to the study opened, and Elena walked in. She was dressed in a sharp, tailored black pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sleek bun. The wounds on her back still burned beneath the fabric, but she stood tall, radiating an icy, untouchable elegance.
Adrian didn’t turn around. His voice was hoarse, defeated. “Are you happy now? You destroyed everything my father spent forty years building. You ruined us.”
“Your father built his empire on extortion, bribery, and broken promises,” Elena said, her voice devoid of emotion. “He just forgot that empires built on sand wash away when the tide comes in.”
Adrian turned slowly, his eyes bloodshot and hollow. “Did you ever love me, Elena? Even a little bit? Or was the quiet wife routine just a long con?”
“I loved you enough to ignore the rumors for eight months,” Elena answered softly. “I loved you enough to try and build a normal life, far away from the blood and business of the Moretti name. But you mistook my peace for weakness, Adrian. You thought because I didn’t scream or threaten you, I had no teeth.”
Adrian let out a bitter, choked laugh. “And now what? Divorce? Alimony? You’re going to strip me clean and leave me on the street?”
“Divorce? No,” Elena replied, walking over to the mahogany desk and placing a single, thick manila folder beside him. “Divorce implies we were equals in a legal contract. What’s happening here is an eradication.”

Adrian opened the folder with trembling fingers. Inside were the preliminary divorce papers—not for a settlement, but for a total forfeiture of assets, coupled with criminal indictments signed by federal prosecutors. Every property, every bank account, every luxury car, and every patent bearing the Cole name had been transferred to a holding company controlled by Dominic Moretti.
“You’re left with exactly what you started with, Adrian,” Elena said, turning toward the door. “Nothing.”
