Chapter 1 - The Iron Gates Slam Shut

The heavy wrought-iron gates of the Cole estate didn't just close—they locked with a definitive, mechanical screech that echoed over the marble ballroom. Fifty elite guests turned as one, their champagne glasses frozen midway to their lips. The festive murmur died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, collective dread.
Adrian Cole forced a harsh, nervous laugh, though his eyes darted frantically toward the tall arched windows. Outside, the night sky shattered under the glare of high-intensity headlights. A convoy of five matte-black tactical SUVs rolled past the fountains, their tires crushing the manicured gravel with ruthless precision.
“What kind of cheap theatrical stunt is this?” Adrian snapped, his voice cracking slightly as he looked around the room. He stepped toward the French doors, trying to regain his posture. “Some rented security company looking for attention. Security! Someone clear the driveway!”
Not a single guard or staff member moved. The terrified employee who had cut Elena down stood frozen against the wall, clutching the knife like a talisman.
Vanessa’s carefully sculpted expression faltered. The ruined silver designer dress, which she had worn like a badge of triumph just minutes ago, suddenly felt like a target painted on her back. She clutched Adrian’s arm, her fingernails digging into his sleeve. “Adrian… what is happening? Who did she call?”
Elena stood calm and composed by the champagne table. The raw, burning stripes across her back throbbed beneath her coat, but she didn’t flinch. She met Margaret Cole’s terrified gaze with an eerie, placid smile.
“You called me a charity case, Margaret,” Elena said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent hall. “You said I came from nothing. But you never asked what my family built out of that nothing.”
Before Margaret could retort, the grand double doors of the ballroom blew open.
A freezing gust of autumn wind swept inside, carrying the scent of rain, asphalt, and absolute authority. Five men stepped across the threshold, moving in tight, synchronized formation. They wore tailored charcoal suits, dark overcoats, and faces carved from granite.

At the front walked Dominic Moretti. His eyes scanned the room once, locked onto the weeping welts visible through Elena’s collar, and went completely black.
“Adrian Cole,” Dominic’s voice cut through the silence like a razor blade. “Step away from my sister.”
