Chapter 3 - The Dissolution of an Empire

By midnight, the Cole estate had transformed from a glittering temple of high society into a holding cell. The fifty elite guests had been systematically checked, their identities logged by Nico’s private security detail, and allowed to leave only after surrendering their phones to ensure no word of the Moretti takeover leaked to the press before the financial kill shot was delivered.

Adrian sat slumped in a velvet armchair in his own study, clutching a bloody handkerchief to his mouth. Richard and Margaret paced the Persian rug, their faces pale, while Vanessa sobbed uncontrollably on a sofa in the corner.

Luca Moretti sat casually on the edge of the mahogany desk, flipping through a thick stack of corporate documents that Gabriel had printed out and handed to him.

“Fascinating,” Luca murmured, not looking up. “You embezzled pension funds from the Cole Construction workers to finance Vanessa’s boutique and your third yacht in Monaco. Classic wire fraud. Federal offense. Minimum fifteen years.”

“You can’t do this!” Richard shouted, slamming his fist onto the armrest. “We have lawyers! We have judges in our pocket!”

“You had judges,” Luca corrected smoothly, sliding a document toward Richard. “Judge Higgins resigned ten minutes ago after Nico sent him a very polite dossier regarding his gambling debts and your joint shell companies. But don't worry, Richard. You won't need a judge for a very long time.”

Adrian glared up at Elena, who stood by the French doors flanked by Dominic and Matteo. Hatred warped his handsome features. “Elena! You’re my wife! You can’t let them do this! We’re married!”

Elena turned slowly, her eyes devoid of any warmth. “We were married, Adrian. Until you decided to humiliate me in front of fifty people while your mistress watched and laughed. You forgot who I was. You forgot that the Moretti name didn't disappear just because I chose to live a quiet life with you.”

“You let me play the fool!” Adrian hissed, standing up unsteadily. “You sat in this house for three years acting like a quiet, submissive mouse!”

“I was giving you a chance to be a decent human being,” Elena replied coldly. “You failed every test.”

The heavy mahogany doors opened, and an elderly man in a bespoke gray suit stepped inside, accompanied by two armed guards. It was Arthur Vance, the chief managing partner of Cole Enterprises’ primary financial backer, Vanguard Capital.

Arthur didn't even look at Adrian. He walked straight up to Elena, removed his hat, and bowed slightly.

“Good evening, Miss Moretti. Vanguard Capital has executed emergency acquisition protocols. All Cole family shares have been frozen, and we have exercised our clause to strip Richard Cole of his CEO title effective immediately.”

Richard clutched his chest, gasping for breath as Margaret rushed to his side. “No… no, Vanguard wouldn’t… we built this together!”

“Vanguard doesn’t care about past builders,” Arthur said indifferently. “They care about survival. And right now, the Moretti family owns ninety-one percent of your debt.”
