Chapter 9 - The Final Stroke

The flashbulbs outside the courthouse were blinding as Maya and I walked down the marble steps into the crisp morning air. Reporters shouted questions over one another, microphones thrust toward us like a forest of metal stalks.

"Ms. Sterling! Will you be launching a civil suit against Eleanor Sterling?"

"Chloe, how is your baby?"

"What is your advice to other survivors of domestic abuse?"

I stopped at the top of the steps, turning to face the cameras. The morning sunlight caught the emerald pendant resting against my collarbone—a gift Maya had bought me to celebrate our freedom. I placed my right hand gently over my rounded stomach, feeling a strong, rhythmic kick of life.

"My advice is simple," I said into the wall of microphones, my voice steady, clear, and resonant across the global broadcast. "Never let anyone convince you that your survival depends on their mercy. Build your own armor. And if they hand you a hammer, show them how to build an empire out of the rubble."

Cheers erupted from the crowd of advocates and supporters gathered behind the press barrier.

Maya stood beside me, wrapping her arm securely around my waist, her eyes bright with unshed tears of victory.

"Where to next, boss?" Maya whispered with a small, knowing smile.

I looked down at my phone, where an email notification from a major international design conglomerate had just landed in my inbox—offering me the position of Creative Director for their global headquarters.

"Home," I smiled, turning away from the cameras and stepping down into our bright, unwritten future. "We're going home."
