Chapter 5 - The Digital Vault

The safe apartment was quiet except for the steady hum of Maya’s laptop cooling fan. Outside, the afternoon sun of early spring cast long, sharp shadows across the floorboards.
"If we release this data directly to the internet," Maya pointed out, her finger hovering over the touchpad, "Eleanor's legal team will claim it was illegally obtained spyware. It might get us into trouble before the criminal assault trial even begins."
"We aren't leaking it to social media," I replied, leaning back against the sofa cushions and resting my hands on my swollen stomach. "We're sending it directly to the federal prosecutors handling Marcus's assault case, with copies simultaneously delivered to the chief investigative editor of the Financial Times."
Maya smiled slowly, the tension in her shoulders melting into predatory satisfaction. "Letting the professionals do the heavy lifting while we sit back and watch their house of cards implode."
"Eleanor wanted a public spectacle," I said softly, my eyes fixed on the blank television screen across the room. "Let's give her a front-row seat to her own funeral."
For the next six hours, Maya and I worked like elite intelligence operatives. We organized the digital files into meticulously categorized folders:
Folder A: Offshore shell companies used by Eleanor to embezzle funds from public infrastructure bids.
Folder B: Internal Slack messages where Marcus explicitly mocked investors and bragged about using physical intimidation to silence whistleblowers.

Folder C: The raw, uncompressed metadata of the hammer assault video, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was captured on Marcus’s personal iPhone and uploaded directly from his home IP address.
By midnight, the encrypted packages were dispatched. All we had to do was wait for the dominoes to fall.
