Chapter 1 - The Iron Clench

The heavy oak door of the VIP hospital room muffled the chaotic sounds of the corridor, but it couldn't block the adrenaline roaring in my ears. Outside, boots thudded against the linoleum floor. Fast. Reckless. The unmistakable cadence of a man accustomed to bullying his way through every obstacle life put in his path.
Marcus.
My hand stayed glued to my lower abdomen, feeling the frantic, startled flutter of our baby. Six months. Six months of walking on eggshells, biting my tongue, and convincing myself that keeping the peace would eventually soften a monster. I had watched him shatter my foot with the casual indifference of a carpenter driving nails into drywall, all while his mother—Eleanor—sipped chamomile tea from her bone-china cup and criticized my weeping.
"Chloe," my sister Maya whispered, her knuckles stark white as she gripped her phone. The screen flickered, displaying the saved MP4 file. Thirteen seconds of sheer, unadulterated barbarism. "Security is calling the floor nurse. They're stopping him at the elevators."
"They won't stop him long," I murmured, my voice steadying through sheer fury. Pain lanced up my leg from the cast encasing my shattered tarsals, a sharp reminder that the man outside viewed me not as a wife, or the mother of his child, but as property that had dared to malfunction. "Marcus has spent half a million dollars donating to this hospital's new wing. The administrators treat him like royalty."
As if on cue, a heavy thud echoed against the door, followed by a muffled roar.
"Open up, Chloe! Don't be melodramatic!" Marcus's voice boomed through the solid wood, thick with drunken arrogance and cold rage. "You're embarrassing yourself! Pack your things, we're going home right now before I lose my temper!"
Before you lose your temper? A bitter, humorless laugh bubbled up my throat. He had already hammered my bones to splinters. What was left to lose?
"Mr. Sterling, you need to step back immediately!" A female security guard's voice pierced through the door. "If you take another step forward, we will involve local law enforcement!"
"Do you know who my family is?" Marcus barked, his voice escalating into a feral snarl. "That woman in there is my legally wedded wife! She fell down the stairs! She's hysterical and confused!"
Fell down the stairs. The classic abuser's alibi. They hadn't even bothered to concoct a creative lie before posting the trophy video to the family group chat, high on their own impunity.
Maya looked at me, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, protective fire. "He thinks he can sweep this under the rug with a PR spin and a checkbook. He doesn't know I sent a cloud-backed mirror of the file to my attorney friend downtown, as well as the local precinct's domestic violence unit."
My breath hitched. "You did?"
May you like
"The moment we pulled out of their driveway," Maya said coldly, sliding her phone into her blazer pocket. "People like Marcus and Eleanor live in a glass castle because they think everyone else is too terrified to throw a stone. Let's see how they like the avalanche."
Suddenly, the knob rattled violently. Someone had overridden the electronic lock with a master key card.
