Chapter 4 - The Matriarch's Counter-Strike

Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital and moved directly into a secure, undisclosed safe apartment arranged by the state’s domestic violence advocacy network. Maya had moved in with me, bringing her laptop, a mountain of legal paperwork, and an unwavering determination.

My foot was immobilized in a heavy fiberglass cast, healing slowly under heavy painkillers and daily anticoagulant injections to prevent blood clots.

We thought we had won the first round. We were dangerously wrong.

On the fourth morning, Maya walked out of the kitchen holding a steaming mug of coffee, her face pale as parchment. She placed her laptop on the coffee table in front of the sofa.

"Chloe, you need to see this. Right now."

I leaned forward, wincing as my cast brushed the cushions. "What is it? Did Marcus post bail?"

"Bail was denied because of the severity of the charges and flight risk," Maya said grimly. "It's not Marcus. It's her."

She turned the screen toward me. A major national financial news blog had just published an exclusive exposé, accompanied by a glossy, perfectly curated press photo of Eleanor Sterling looking like a grieving, dignified matriarch.

The headline blared across the screen:

REPUTABLE DESIGN FIRM HEIR FALSELY ACCUSED: HOW A DISGRUNTLED FORMER INTERN AND HER ESTRANGED SISTER ATTEMPTED A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR EXTORTION.

My breath caught in my throat. I began reading the article, my eyes darting across the malicious lies woven by high-priced PR spin doctors hired by Eleanor.

The article painted a completely inverted reality:

It claimed that I—a junior designer who had recently completed a three-month internship at an allied firm—had grown bitter after being rejected romantically by Marcus Sterling.

It alleged that the hospital video was an elaborate deepfake created using stolen corporate AI credentials.

Most sickeningly, it claimed my pregnancy wasn't even Marcus's, suggesting a sordid affair with a coworker before I fabricated the domestic abuse narrative to trap the Sterling family fortune.

"They're preemptively destroying our credibility," Maya whispered, her hands shaking with rage. "Eleanor knows the criminal case is airtight, so she's turning it into a public relations war. She's mobilizing the entire corporate media network to brand you as a gold-digging liar before the trial even begins."

My phone buzzed on the coffee table. Then it buzzed again. And again.

Within minutes, my personal social media accounts—which I hadn't checked in days—were flooded with thousands of hate comments, death threats, and vicious messages from anonymous trolls calling me a whore, a liar, and a parasite.

Maya reached for the phone to shut it off, but I stopped her. My hand, steady and cold, picked up the device.

For months, I had been the quiet, submissive girl who took the blows without crying out too loud, terrified of disrupting their perfect world. But sitting there in oversized sweatpants with a broken foot and a growing life inside me, something inside my soul turned to cold steel.

"They think they can bury me with their money?" I whispered, looking up at Maya. "They forgot one crucial detail."

Maya blinked. "What detail?"

"For the past three months, while I was interning at their corporate partner firms and designing their high-profile corporate capability profiles and branding assets..." I tapped the screen of my phone, opening my encrypted cloud storage drive. "...I didn't just design their brochures, Maya. I managed their digital archives. And I kept a mirror backup of every single financial discrepancy, tax evasion memo, and illegal offshore transfer Marcus and Eleanor tried to scrub from the main servers."

Maya's eyes widened in stunned disbelief. "You have their corporate books?"

"I have everything," I said, a dangerous, beautiful smile touching my lips. "The Sterling empire wasn't built on hard work. It was built on fraud, bribery, and extortion. And Eleanor just handed me the microphone."
