Chapter 29 - The Warden’s Reckoning

The terminal let out a sharp, piercing harmonic chime that fed back through the boathouse’s radio receivers, broadcasting directly into the military-grade communications frequency used by the helicopter overhead.

**CIPHER ACCEPTED.**

**ST. JUDE TRUST ASSETS: LIQUIDATED.**

**GLOBAL OBSIDIAN VEIL ACCOUNTS: EXPOSED TO INTERPOL, FINCEN, AND THE PENTAGON.**

**FAIL-SAFE ASSET FORFEITURE: EXECUTED.**

In the sky above, the blacked-out helicopter suddenly lost its telemetry. The avionics console in the cockpit erupted into a cascade of warning alarms as the Vance family’s private satellite network—funded and routed through the very servers Clara had just seized and fried—instantly revoked its cryptographic handshake.

The navigation system died. The fly-by-wire stabilization failed.

"What did you do?!" Julian’s voice shrieked over the open radio channel, the smooth, aristocratic arrogance replaced by the wild, guttural terror of an animal caught in a snare. "What did she do?!"

The incendiary rockets went wild, missing the boathouse by fifty yards, slamming into the open ocean and detonating in massive geysers of boiling foam and steam.

The helicopter spun violently out of control, its tail rotor clipping the jagged granite teeth of Heron Rock bluff with a deafening screech of ripping titanium.

A shower of sparks lit up the storm clouds. The aircraft banked hard, smoke billowing from its engine housing, before plunging into the churning breakers six hundred yards out at sea.

Silence fell over the beach.

The roaring wind seemed to hold its breath. The only sound was the crackle of burning debris floating on the black swells of the Atlantic, and the distant, rising wail of Coast Guard cutters and federal tactical transport sirens converging on the shoreline from the south.

Clara dropped to her knees beside David.

"David! David, stay with me!" she screamed, ripping off her wool scarf, pressing it down against the deep, ragged wound in his chest. "Look at me! Don't you dare close your eyes!"

David looked up at her through half-closed lids, the blood on his lips parted in a faint, exhausted smile.

"Noah... is safe?" he whispered.

"He's safe. He's with the Coast Guard. We won, David. You hear me? It's over. Julian is gone."

David reached up with a trembling, bloodstained hand, his fingers barely grazing the curve of her cheek. "I’m sorry... Clara. I should have... told you..."

"Shut up," she wept, pressing her forehead against his, tears washing away the grime on his skin. "You survive this, Callahan. You survive, and you help me raise our son. Do you understand me? You don't get to leave."

His hand slipped from her face, falling limp onto the wet stone as his eyes slid closed.

May you like

"DAVID!"
