Chapter 17 - The Breaking of the Storm

Tactical stun grenades erupted with blinding flashes and concussive thunder inside the beacon chamber. David swung through the shattered window frame on a fast-rope, his rifle leveled instantly at the two private security contractors Eleanor had stationed on the catwalk outside.
Gunfire crackled through the gale. David fired three controlled bursts, neutralizing the armed men on the outer deck while Clara pinned Eleanor against the steel desk, securing her wrists with heavy-duty flex-cuffs.
"Federal agents! On the ground! Don't move!" David’s voice roared over the screeching wind as two more tactical officers rappelled into the chamber.
Eleanor, her face pressed against the cold steel of the desk, hissed through clenched teeth, "You foolish girl... you think this ends with handcuffs? I have assets in nine jurisdictions you can't touch! You have destroyed nothing!"
"Look at the screen, Eleanor," Clara whispered directly into her ear.
Eleanor’s gaze darted to the satellite terminal.
The display was not processing an asset release. It was running an automated liquidation script—the exact same script Clara had deployed against Julian at 2:00 PM on the day her marriage ended. Every shell company, every bearer bond repository, every offshore real-estate trust tied to Eleanor’s biometric hash was being systematically seized by Interpol and the Department of the Treasury in real time.
"You gave Arthur the power to ruin lives," Clara said, watching the account balances plunge toward zero. "You gave Julian the arrogance to treat people like cattle. You thought you were the puppeteer, Eleanor. But in the light of day, you’re just another criminal with nowhere left to hide."
The sound of twin-rotor Coast Guard helicopters echoed across the storm-tossed sea outside, their searchlights bathing the ancient lighthouse in a blinding, brilliant white halo.

Eleanor Vance’s eyes went dead, the realization of absolute, total defeat crashing over her like the black Atlantic waves below.
