Chapter 25 - The Puppet Master’s Masquerade

"They’ve located the boathouse!" David barked, the soldier snapping back into dominance instantly, burying the agonizing personal confession beneath layers of tactical survival.

He slammed the satellite drive into his pocket, kicked the power terminal off the table, and drew his secondary weapon. "Clara, the sea gate. Under the floorboards. There's a Zodiac inflatable moored in the wet slip. Take Noah and Mrs. Gable. The GPS is pre-programmed for the Coast Guard station at Cape Elizabeth."

"And you?" Clara asked, her voice shaking with an incomprehensible mixture of anger, betrayal, and a terrifying, desperate instinct to keep this man alive.

"I am the target Marcus wants," David said, checking the chamber of his rifle. "He doesn't just want the child; he wants the digital keys to the St. Jude Trust that are stored on this drive. If I stay and engage them on the bluffs, he won't look at the water until you're past the shoals."

"David—"

"Go!" he yelled.

The heavy wooden doors of the boathouse exploded inward in a hail of buckshot and splintered pine.

Two men in black tactical gear burst through the smoke. David fired before they could raise their submachine guns, double-tapping the first operative in the chest, pivoting smoothly to drive the second backward into the freezing surf outside the threshold.

Clara didn't hesitate. Survival was a language she had learned through fire and blood at Vance Manor. She grabbed Mrs. Gable by the coat, kicked open the hatch leading down into the wet slip, and guided the elderly woman down the metal ladder into the bobbing black rubber Zodiac.

The motor was already primed. Clara hit the starter button; the four-stroke engine roared to life with a low, muffled purr.

She placed Noah into Mrs. Gable’s trembling arms.

"Clara! Get in!" Mrs. Gable cried over the sound of gunfire rattling above them on the main deck.

Clara looked at the ladder. She looked at her son, safe in the arms of the woman who had protected him since birth. Then she looked up toward the sounds of David’s dying stand.

She remembered 1:59 PM. She remembered the dining room of Vance Manor, where Julian had stood before their family and friends, displaying forged financial ledgers, declaring her mentally unfit, stripping her of her dignity while the sycophants smiled into their champagne. She had promised herself on that cold afternoon that she would never run again. She would never allow a Vance to dictate the terms of her life, her family, or her freedom.

"Take Noah to the Coast Guard, Mrs. Gable," Clara said with terrifying calm. "Hit the red button on the console once you clear the breaker. It triggers the distress beacon."

"Clara, no! You can't go back up there!"

"I am the one who finishes this," Clara said.

She cast off the mooring line, shoved the Zodiac out into the dark, churning current of the tidal channel, and watched as the boat vanished into the swirling sea fog.

Then, she pulled the slide back on her Glock, chambering a round, and climbed back up the ladder into hell.
