Chapter 19 - The Hearth and the Horizon

Thanksgiving arrived with the smell of roasting turkey, spiced apples, and fresh-baked sourdough filling the house. The windows were golden against the falling dusk, and the dining room table was set not with the pretentious silver and crystal of Vance Manor, but with simple ceramic plates and wildflowers gathered from the meadow.
Marcus Vance and David’s sister, Sarah, had joined them for dinner. Marcus, looking ten years younger since his testimony had been sealed and Eleanor had been locked away, raised his glass of sparkling cider.
"To Clara," Marcus said, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "The bravest person I have ever known. You taught our family what honor actually looks like."
"To Clara," David and Sarah echoed, their glasses clinking warmly above the hearth.
Noah clapped his hands, giggling as David scooped a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto his plate. Clara looked around the table, feeling a deep, radiating warmth that had nothing to do with the roaring fire in the stone fireplace.
Later that evening, after Marcus and Sarah had departed and Noah was fast asleep upstairs, Clara stood on the porch with David under a canopy of brilliant, diamond-bright stars. The ocean was calm, murmuring gently against the shore like a lullaby.
David stepped behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. "What are you thinking about?"
"About 2:00 PM," Clara said softly, turning in his arms to look up into his warm, steady eyes. "I used to think that moment defined my life. The betrayal. The humiliation. The vengeance."
"And now?" David asked, his hands gently framing her face.
"Now I know it was just the moment the door opened," Clara whispered, rising on her tiptoes to press her lips against his. "So I could find you. So we could build this."
May you like
David smiled, kissing her deeply, their silhouettes merging under the starlight as the world around them settled into profound, unshakeable serenity.
