Chapter 28 - The Counter-Strike

Through the choking, blinding haze of tear gas, Clara coughed violently, her eyes burning, her skin on fire. David was shielding her body with his own, absorbing the impact of falling timber and shattered concrete.
"Clara... the drive..." David choked out, pressing the encrypted solid-state drive into her palm. "The secondary protocol... 2:00 PM..."
"What are you talking about?" she coughed, pulling his heavy arm over her shoulder, trying desperately to drag him toward the water.
"Your father’s plan... wasn't just to expose them," David whispered, his breathing shallow, wet. "The Vance Trust has a kill-switch. It unlocks at exactly... 2:00. The code isn't numbers... it’s the voice cipher from the trial. Julian’s confession."
Clara looked at the small metal drive in her hand. The memories flooded back—the secret recording she had made during the bitter divorce deposition, the recording she thought the judge had sealed and dismissed. David had preserved it. He had woven it into the very architecture of the Vance financial empire.
Above them, Marcus was dragged into a harness lowered from the hovering helicopter. Julian’s private extraction team was lifting the wounded brother up into the sky.
Julian’s face appeared in the open side door of the helicopter, illuminated by the red cabin lights, looking down at the ruin below with a grin of supreme arrogance. He raised a radio transmitter to his lips.
"Burn the beach!" Julian commanded over the external speakers. "Leave nothing!"
Two incendiary rockets dropped from the helicopter’s pylons, screaming toward the boathouse.
Clara did not panic. The blinding terror that had haunted her for three years vanished, replaced by an absolute, icy clarity. She shoved the drive into the USB port of David’s satellite terminal, which lay cracked but still blinking on the wet concrete.
The screen prompted: **ENTER FINAL RECLAMATION CIPHER — 2:00 PROTOCOL.**
Her watch ticked over.
1:59:58.
1:59:59.
2:00:00 AM.
Clara leaned over the microphone integrated into the rugged terminal and spoke with steady, venomous precision:
May you like
*"You thought you destroyed me, Julian. But you only freed me."*
