Chapter 60 - The Seventh Horizon

It was not a standard ring. It was the rhythmic, high-frequency pulsing tone of an emergency priority alert—a signal that could only be transmitted through the secure channel Clara and I had established using the sovereign frequency keys.

With numb, trembling fingers, I pulled the receiver from my tactical vest and hit the speaker button.

"Clara?" I rasped, my throat raw from smoke and freezing air. "It's over. Constance is dead. The primary servers are destroyed. The Charter... the Charter has no central brain anymore. It's done."

Static crackled over the line, long and hollow, like the sound of wind traveling across thousands of miles of open ocean.

Then came Clara’s voice.

She was not crying. She was not celebrating. Her voice was flat, hollowed out by a terror so profound that it sounded almost mechanical.

*"Evelyn... where are you?"*

"I’m at the summit observation outpost above the sanitarium," I said, leaning against the concrete frame, shivering violently. "I’m getting to the snowmobile and heading down toward the French border. Tell the prosecutors to seal the coordinates."

*"Evelyn, listen to me,"* Clara whispered, her breath shuddering into the microphone. *"Turn on the global broadcast feed. Turn on anything."*

I pulled the hardened tactical tablet from my pack, powering it on with my thumbprint. It took twenty seconds to lock onto the low-orbit satellite constellation.

When the screen illuminated, every major financial index in the world—London, Tokyo, New York, Frankfurt—was bathed in blinding, violent red.

Every single transaction ticker was suspended. The trading halts were not regional; they were total. But it wasn't a market crash.

Across the bottom of the news tickers, on every network, in twelve different languages, scrolled a single, identical announcement originating from an automated release server in Geneva:

`THE SOVEREIGN CHARTER OF 1944 HAS CONCLUDED.`

`PURSUANT TO ARTICLE VII, DEFAULT HAS BEEN DECLARED ON ALL PARTICIPATING TREASURIES.`

`COLLATERAL SEIZURE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.`

`SOLE EXECUTRIX RECOGNIZED: EVELYN VANE.`

My breath stopped. The tablet slipped an inch in my grip.

"What is this?" I breathed into the phone. "Clara, what did Constance do?!"

*"She didn't do it, Evelyn,"* Clara sobbed quietly over the static. *"You did. When you inserted your drive into the console to download the Svalbard ledger... the system didn't destroy the Charter. It verified your biometric telemetry. The thermite didn't wipe the records—it triggered the automated distribution of the sovereign debt covenants to your personal biometric custody."*

*"You don't understand,"* Clara's voice cracked. *"You didn't destroy their bank. You just inherited it. Every central bank in Europe and Asia has just received a legal foreclosure notice on their gold reserves... signed with your digital thumbprint."*

Before I could speak, the howling of the blizzard outside the observation window was drowned out by a deafening, rhythmic thrumming that rattled the very bedrock beneath my feet.

Down through the swirling wall of snow, descending directly above the concrete roof of the observation post, came the colossal black silhouette of an unmarked, twin-rotor military transport helicopter.

Its high-powered searchlights snapped on simultaneously, piercing the whiteout and pinning me against the shattered window in a blinding cone of blue-white light.

Through the helicopter’s external loudspeaker, a voice echoed across the frozen peaks—a calm, cultured, utterly unfamiliar male voice:

*"Stand down, Madame Executrix. The board of governors has convened. We have come to escort you to your coronation."*
