Chapter 33 - The Deep Horizon Protocol

"Why would Jonathan tie the vault to *my* signature?" I demanded, the memory of that suffocating chapel—the silk, the ash, the cold metal of his ring—rising like bile in my throat.

Victoria took a slow sip of tea before replying. "Jonathan’s paranoia was his only true genius. He knew that if I ever moved against him, I would attempt to bypass Clara by legally revoking her existence. But you, Evelyn... you were an outsider. An academic, an archivist, someone with no lineage to trace. He believed that by embedding your biological metrics—your retinal pattern and your pulse cadence recorded through the biometric sensor inside your platinum wedding band—he could ensure neither I nor the sovereign council could touch the vault without keeping you alive and cooperative."

"And if we refuse?" Clara asked, stepping closer to the table, her eyes ablaze. "What if we walk out those gates and let your sovereign families burn? Let them lose their billions. Let the whole rotten edifice collapse into the sea."

Victoria did not flinch. She simply tilted her head, her gaze drifting toward the high windows. Outside, on the terrace, two men in dark tactical gear stepped into view. Across the lake, a police launch cut through the water, its blue light flashing silently in the distance.

"If Deep Horizon remains locked for another forty-eight hours," Victoria said with terrifying equanimity, "the failsafe activates. The mainframe will automatically dump seven hundred billion dollars of sovereign debt into the open market at zero cost. The resulting liquidity shock will dismantle the European banking sector within twenty minutes. The currency markets will freeze. Pension funds will evaporate overnight. Food supply logistics across forty nations will grind to a halt before the week is out."

She turned her pale eyes back to us, cold and merciless. "You think you fought a private war against an abusive man. You didn't. You triggered a siege against the foundations of modern capital. Jonathan built a suicide vest out of the global economy, and the detonator is strapped to your wrists."

I looked at Clara. The horror on her face matched my own. We had thought we were exposing a predator; instead, we had pulled the pin on an economic grenade designed to scorch the earth if Jonathan ever fell from his throne.

"The facility is unmanned?" Clara asked.

"It was designed to be," Victoria answered. "Maintained by automated geothermal conduits and monitored via sovereign transponders. But our sensors indicate that two days ago—twelve hours before Jonathan was formally arraigned in Indiana—a private mercenary transport landed at the Thule airfield. A rogue tactical unit led by Jonathan’s former chief of security, Viktor Vance, has breached the surface entry shaft. Vance isn't there to disarm the vault. He's there to wipe the biometric locks permanently, which will trigger Protocol Zero instantly."

"Why would Vance destroy it?" I asked.

"Because Vance is a nihilist who knows he will spend the rest of his life in a supermax if the sovereign council captures him," Victoria said sharply. "He intends to hold the world's central banks for a trillion-dollar ransom, and if they hesitate for five seconds, he will press the switch."

She stood up, leaning lightly on an ebony cane with an obsidian handle. "A Gulfstream is currently idling on the private runway at Geneva Cointrin. It has clearance to enter Danish military airspace above Greenland. A deep-sea deployment bell is already positioned above the trench. You will fly there. You will enter the vault. You will disarm the failsafe."

"And you?" Clara asked, her voice laced with venom. "Where will you be while we plunge into an arctic abyss?"

May you like

"I will be right behind you, my dear," Victoria whispered, her eyes glittering with ancestral malice. "A mother must always see her house put in order."
